INTRODUCTION
During a study of the ORNLspecifications for fuel elements to be used in the Medium
Power Reactor Experiment (MPRE) and Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE), it
was noted that gadolinium oxide-aluminum oxide pellets were being used in place
of boron.(1-2) Both materials have a high neutron cross section and are very effec-
tive at minimizing neutron leakage from the fuel elements. It was also found that
little information was available on the fabrication of the desired gadolinium oxide-
aluminum oxide (70 wt % Gd2O3-30 wt % A1203) compacts or the thermal expan-
sion characteristics of this material.
