The goal of this paper is to establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup of the full homeomorphism group of a manifold to be the stability group of a point in the underlying space. Such subgroups are useful in identifying the underlying space in terms of its homeomorphism group even in cases in which this space is not necessarily a manifold. Thus, stability groups are useful in classifying various spaces.
The purpose of this study was to examine factors used by arbitrators in deciding the outcome of disciplinary labor arbitration cases involving excessive employee absenteeism. In the middle of his career, Arthur Garfield Dove created a smell yet novel body of landscape assemblages. They illustrate Dove's central interest in evoking nature--its motifs and rhythms--through imaginative associations of organic and man-made materials. These works represent Dove's synthesis of contemporary European stylistic and intellectual ideas as well as American philosophies and concerns. They also reflect the influence of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle and the artist Helen Torr, Dove's second wife. This study examines how Dove used a complex interplay of European theory and technique, American ideas and his own nature-based abstract style to create the landscape assemblages, works that are uniquely independent in the history of American art.

The earthworms, Lubricus terrestris and Eisenia foetida, were used as non mammalian surrogate models to assess the immunotoxicpotential of xenobiotic to mammals. Assays were developed and optimized for detecting spreading activity and phagocytosis of rabbit red blood cell (RRBC), bacteria, and yeasts by macrophage-like coelomocytes of L. terrestris.
The stress protein response (SPR) is a conserved and ubiquitous mechanism that enables cells to tolerate a wide variety of environmental insults. This response involves the preferential synthesis of an array of proteins with different molecular weights. These proteins perform a variety of functions, such as protein folding, multimeric protein assembly, steroid receptor binding, and heme catabolism. To evaluate the potential use of the SPR as a biomonitoring tool, a stepwise plan was utilized that proceeded through various physical and chemical laboratory exposures and culminated with a field validation study. The goals of the laboratory exposures were threefold: (1) determine the time required for induction of the SPR; (2) determine the dose-responsiveness of the SPR; and (3) compare the increased syntheses and accumulations of stress proteins to classical toxicological endpoints (i.e. percent mortality, LC50, LC1, etc).
Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaM kinase II) is demonstrated to exist in the ß-cell and immunopecipitation. Glucose and potassium significantly stimulate the rapid autophosphorylation of CaM kinase II and proportionally induce autonomous activity of the kinase in a dose-dependent manner that parallels insulin secretion. The activation of CaM kinase II, alloxan, KN-62 and KN-93, suggest that the enzyme is an integral component of insulin secretion and/or related processes in the β-cell.
