Correlation of the Characteristics of Single-Cylinder and Flight Engines in Tests of High-Performance Fuels in an Air-Cooled Engine 1 - Cooling Characteristics
Variable charge-air flow, cooling-air pressure drop, and fuel-air ration investigations were conducted to determine the cooling characteristics of a full-scale air-cooled single cylinder on a CUE setup. The data are compared with similar data that were available for the same model multicylinder engine tested in flight in a four-engine airplane. The cylinder-head cooling correlations were the same for both the single-cylinder and the flight engine. The cooling correlations for the barrels differed slightly in that the barrel of the single-cylinder engine runs cooler than the barrel of te flight engine for the same head temperatures and engine conditions.
Direct method of design and stress analysis of rotating disks with temperature gradient
A method is presented for the determination of the contour of disks, typified by those of aircraft gas turbines, to incorporate arbitrary elastic-stress distributions resulting from either centrifugal or combined centrifugal and thermal effects. The specified stress may be radial, tangential, or any combination of the two. Use is made of the finite-difference approach in solving the stress equations, the amount of computation necessary in the evolution of a design being greatly reduced by the judicious selection of point stations by the aid of a design chart. Use of the charts and of a preselected schedule of point stations is also applied to the direct problem of finding the elastic and plastic stress distribution in disks of a given design, thereby effecting a great reduction in the amount of calculation. Illustrative examples are presented to show computational procedures in the determination of a new design and in analyzing an existing design for elastic stress and for stresses resulting from plastic flow.

The wing configurations tested included the wing with various combinations of extensible leading-edge and split flaps" (p. 1).
Effect of First-Stage Blade Design on Performance of Mark 25 Torpedo Power Plant
"The effect of rotor-blade length, inlet angle, and shrouding was investigated with four different nozzles in a single-stage modification of the Mark 25 aerial-torpedo power plant. The results obtained with the five special rotor configurations are compared with those of the standard first-stage rotor with each nozzle. Each nozzle-rotor combination was operated at nominal pressure ratios of 8, 15 (design), and 20 over a range of speeds from 6000 rpm to the design speed of 18,000 rpm" (p. 1).
Effect of Turbine Axial Nozzle-Wheel Clearance on Performance of Mark 25 Torpedo Power Plant
"Investigations were made of the turbine from a Mark 25 torpedo to determine the performance of the unit with three different turbine nozzles at various axial nozzle-wheel clearances. Turbine efficiency with a reamed nondivergent nozzle that uses the axial clearance space for gas expansion was little affected by increasing the axial running clearance from 0.030 to 0.150 inch. Turbine efficiency with cast nozzles that expanded the gas inside the nozzle passage was found to be sensitive to increased axial nozzle-wheel clearance" (p. 1).
Effects of Combinations of Aspect Ratio and Sweepback at High Subsonic Mach Numbers
Report discussing an investigation to determine the effects of sweepback and low aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing at high subsonic Mach numbers. Tests were performed at aspect ratios of 2, 3, and 5 and sweepback angles of 0, 30, and 45 degrees. Generally, sweepback and low aspect ratio were found to both delay and lessen the effects of compressibility.
Experimental investigation of hot-gas bleedback for ice protection of turbojet engines 3: nacelle with short straight air inlet

High-speed wind-tunnel investigation of the effects of compressibility on a pitot-static tube
Report presenting a high-speed wind-tunnel investigation of a pitot-static tube to provide information on the effects of compressibility upon the pressure indications of a representative airspeed head at high subsonic speeds. The calibration factor for the instrument has been evaluated for several small angles of pitch and yaw throughout a Mach number range from 0.30 to approximately 0.925. The results indicate that the calibration factor for each combination of pitch and yaw angles tested is almost constant with Mach number up to a Mach number of approximately 0.8.

A method is presented for determining the jet-boundary and plan-form corrections necessary for application to test data for a partial-span model with a reflection plane, an end plate, or no end plate in a closed circular wind tunnel. Examples are worked out for a partial-span model with each of the three end conditions in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel and the corrections are applied to measured values of lift, drag, pitching-moment, rolling-moment, and yawing-moment coefficients.
Knock-Limited Performance of Six Aromatic Amines Blended With a Base Fuel in a Full-Scale Aircraft-Engine Cylinder

Measurements in Flight of the Longitudinal-Stability Characteristics of a Republic YF-84A Airplane (Army Serial No. 45-59488) at High Subsonic Mach Numbers
A brief investigation was made of the longitudinal-stability characteristics of a YF-84A airplane (Army Serial No. 45-79488). The airplane developed a pitching-up tendency at approximately 0.80 Mach number which necessitated large push forces and down-elevator deflections for further increases in speed. In steady turns at 35,000 feet with the center of gravity at 28.3 percent mean aerodynamic chord for normal accelerations up to the maximum test value, the control-force gradients were excessive at Mach numbers over 0.78. Airplane buffeting did not present a serious problem in accelerated or unaccelerated flight at 15,000 and 35,000 feet up to the maximum test Mach number of 0.84. It is believed that excessive control force would be the limiting factor in attaining speeds in excess of 0.84 Mach number, especially at altitudes below 35,000 feet.
Measurements of Aileron Effectiveness of the Bell X-1 Airplane at Mach Numbers Between 0.9 and 1.06
"Abrupt rudder-fixed aileron rolls have been made with the Bell X-1 airplane in powered flight at Mach numbers between 0.90 and 1.06 at about 40,000 feet pressure altitude. These aileron rolls indicate that the aileron effectiveness for large deflections at Mach number 0.94 is only one-fourth the value at Mach number 0.82, and the effectiveness at Mach number 1.06 is slightly greater than at Mach number 0.94" (p. 1).
Measurements of the chordwise pressure distributions over the wing of the XS-1 research airplane in flight
Report presenting measurements of the chordwise pressure distributions over the 8-percent-thick wing of the XS-1 research airplane at a section near the midspan of the left wing. Data are presented for a Mach number range and a normal-force coefficient of about 0.33. Results regarding the upper-surface pressure distribution, lower-surface pressure distributions, and total section loads are provided.
Performance of a Mixed-Flow Impeller in Combination with Semivaneless Diffuser
The performance of a mixed-flow impeller in combination with a semivaneless diffuser were experimentally investigated. The diameter of the impeller was 11.0 inches and a maximum tip diameter of 14.74 inches. The semivaneless diffuser had an overall diameter of 28.00 inches. The performance properties of the mixed-flow impeller were also investigated with a 34.00 inch vane loss diffuser having a transition section of the same geometry as the semivaneless diffuser.
Preliminary Investigation at Low Speeds of Swept Wings in Yawing Flow
Memorandum presenting a wind-tunnel investigation conducted to determine the rotary stability characteristics in yawing flow of a series of untapered wings with angles of sweep of -45, 0, 45, and 60 degrees. The results of the yawing-flow tests indicated that the values of the rotary derivatives agreed fairly well with simple sweep theory for a moderate range of lift coefficients.
Preliminary Investigation of Over-all Performance of Experimental Turbojet Engine for Guided Missiles
"A preliminary investigation of the over-all performance of a simply constructed, short-life, turbojet engine was conducted. The unit was operated at a pressure altitude of 15,000 feet for ram-pressure ratios of 1.2 to 1.8. The corrected engine speed was varied from the minimum for good combustion to about 17,000 rpm, which is approximately 75 percent of rated speed. The performance is given by generalized parameters that permit the calculation of performance at any altitude" (p. 1).
Preliminary Results of an Altitude-Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a TG-100A Gas Turbine-Propeller Engine II - Windmilling Characteristics
An investigation was conducted to determine the operational and performance characteristics of the TG-100A gas turbine-propeller engine II. Windmilling characteristics were deterined for a range of altitudes from 5000 to 35,000 feet, true airspeeds from 100 to 273 miles per hour, and propeller blade angles from 4 degrees to 46 degrees.

Spark ignition of flowing gases I : energies to ignite propane-air mixtures in pressure range of 2 to 4 inches mercury absolute
Ignition studies of flowing gases were made to obtain information applicable to ignition problems in gas-turbine and ram-jet aircraft propulsion systems operating at altitude conditions.Spark energies required for ignition of a flowing propane-air mixture were determined for pressure of 2 to 4 inches mercury absolute, gas velocities of 5.0 to 54.2 feet per second, fuel-air ratios of 0.0607 to 0.1245, and spark durations of 1.5 to 24,400 microseconds. The results showed that at a pressure of 3 inches mercury absolute the minimum energy required for ignition occurred at fuel-air ratios of 0.08 to 0.095. The energy required for ignition increased almost linearly with increasing gas velocity. Shortening the spark duration from approximately 25,000 to 125 microseconds decreased the amount of energy required for ignition. A spark produced by the discharge of a condenser directly into the spark gap and having a duration of 1.5 microseconds required ignition energies larger than most of the long-duration sparks.
Stability and Control Data Obtained from Fourth and Fifth Flights of the Northrop X-4 Airplane (A.F. No. 46-676)
"NACA instrumentation has been installed in the Northrop X-4 airplane to obtain stability and control data during the Northrop conducted acceptance tests. The results of the fourth and fifth flights of the Northrop X-4 number 1 airplane are presented in this paper. These data were obtained for a center-of-gravity position of approximately 19.5 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. The results of this flight showed that the directional stability as measured in steadily increasing sideslips was positive and high and that the effective dihedral was positive. The results also show the airplane to be longitudinally stable, stick fixed, with the center of gravity at 19.5 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord" (p. 1).
Summary of Available Data Relating to Reynolds Number Effects on the Maximum Lift Coefficients of Swept-Back Wings
The available foreign and American data relating to Reynolds number effects on the maximum lift coefficients of swept-back wings are summarized and discussed. The data show that at low Reynolds numbers (below about 2.0 x 10(exp 6)) higher maximum lift coefficients were measured in most cases for moderately swept-back wings than for unswept wings of similar plan form; at high Reynolds numbers, however, increasing sweepback resulted in decreasing maximum lift coefficients. A smaller rate of increase of the maximum lift coefficient with Reynolds number was measured for the swept-back wings than for similar unswept wings in the critical range of Reynolds number. Increasing the Reynolds number resulted in decreases in the maximum lift coefficients of the two wings of approximately triangular plan form that were investigated.

Theoretical study of air forces on an oscillating or steady thin wing in a supersonic main stream

A theoretical study of lateral stability with an automatic pilot
"The influence of automatic operation of the aileron and rudder controls on the lateral stability of an airplane is discussed. The control deflections are assumed to be proportional to the deviations and to the rates of deviation of the airplane from steady-flight conditions. The effects of changes in the types of deviation governing control application are considered. For one simple method of control in which the aileron deflection is proportional to the angle of bank and the rudder deflection is proportional to the angle of yaw, the effect of lag in control application is studied and regions of stability with and without lag are given" (p. 273).
Two-Dimensional Wind-Tunnel Investigation at High Reynolds Numbers of an NACA 65A006 Airfoil With High-Lift Devices
Report presenting an investigation of an NACA 65A006 airfoil equipped with high-lift devices, including a 0.15-chord drooped-nose flap and a 0.20-chord plain trailing-edge flap. Airfoil section lift, pitching-moment, and drag characteristics obtained at high Reynolds numbers and low Mach numbers with the flaps deflected individually and simultaneously are presented. At Reynolds numbers up to 9.0 x 10(exp 6), the optimum combination of drooped-nose and plain trailing-edge flaps increased the maximum section lift coefficients from 0.78 to 1.89.
