An analysis of buzzing in supersonic ram jets by a modified one-dimensional nonstationary wave theory

Description: From Introduction: "The buzz or pulsation of axially symmetric supersonic inlets having central bodies has been the subject of investigations since Oswatitsch first observed the phenomenon in 1944 (ref.1). This buzzing is essentially an oscillation of the normal shock along the spike of certain diffusers operating at mass flows below design, and this buzz decreases the performance of the propulsion units appreciably (ref.2). This paper continues the analysis of the buzzing cycle by means of a m… more

Comparison of several methods for obtaining the time response of linear systems to either a unit impulse or arbitrary input from frequency-response data

Description: Report presenting a description and comparison of several methods of obtaining the time response of linear systems to either a unit impulse or an arbitrary input from frequency-response data. All of the methods give good accuracy when applied to a second-order system; the main difference is the required computing time.

Effect of Phosphate Coatings on Temperature of Metal Parts Exposed to Flame Environments

Description: Note presenting an investigation of the effect of phosphate coatings on the temperature of metal specimens placed in a flame. Small cylindrical specimens of mild steel and S-816 alloy were placed in a natural-gas-air flame at specific temperatures. Special attention is given to the fact that temperature drop was noted in certain specimens and the potential reasons for this reaction are explored.

The Effects of Compressibility on the Upwash at the Propeller Planes of a Four-Engine Tractor Airplane Configuration Having a Wing With 40 Degrees of Sweepback and an Aspect Ratio of 10

Description: Report presenting an investigation in which upflow angles were measured along the horizontal center lines of the propeller planes of a semispan model representing a multiengine airplane with tractor propellers. Testing occurred at a range of Mach and Reynolds numbers. Results regarding the theoretical methods and a comparison of experimental and theoretical results are provided.

Flight Investigation of the Performance of a Two-Stage Solid-Propellant Nike-Deacon (DAN) Meteorological Sounding Rocket

Description: A flight investigation of two Nike-Deacon (DAN) two-stage solid-propellant rocket vehicles indicated satisfactory performance may be expected from the DAN meteorological sounding rocket. Peak altitudes of 356,000 and 350,000 feet, respectively, were recorded for the two flight tests when both vehicles were launched from sea level at an elevation angle of 75 degrees. Performance calculations based on flight-test results show that altitudes between 358,000 feet and 487,000 feet may be attained wi… more

An investigation of vertical-wind-shear intensities from balloon soundings for application to airplane- and missile-response problems

Description: Report presenting an analysis of the daily upper-wind soundings obtained from one station for a period of one year in an attempt to obtain measurements of the vertical wind shear in a form applicable to airplane- and missile-response problems. The results indicate maximum longitudinal shear intensities of about 100 meters per second per kilometer during the winter and spring months and maximum normal shear intensities of about 60 meters per second per kilometer.

Lift and moment coefficients for an oscillating rectangular wing-aileron configuration in supersonic flow

Description: Report presenting the use of linearized theory for compressible unsteady flow to treat the problem of a partial-span rectangular control surface hinged at its leading edge and mounted on a rectangular wing, oscillating in supersonic flow. The motions of the wing-aileron configuration are assumed to consist of vertical translation, pitching, and aileron rotation. Results regarding the spanwise aerodynamic effects and application to flutter are provided.

Preliminary investigation of the effects of external wing fuel tanks on ditching behavior of a sweptback-wing airplane

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation using a model of a typical sweptback-wing airplane equipped with external wing fuel tanks to determine the effects of the tanks on the ditching behavior. Tanks of various fuel capacity and several shape modifications were used. Results regarding the basic model and original 206-gallon tanks, 450-gallon tanks, 260-gallon tanks, and general effects observed are provided.

Static-Thrust Measurements of the Aerodynamic Loading on a Helicopter Rotor Blade

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation of the aerodynamic loading on a 15-foot-diameter helicopter rotor blade in static thrust for a tip-speed range of 400 to 500 feet per second and disk loads of zero to about 2.5 pounds per square foot. The variation of spanwise load distribution near the blade tip with thrust indicates that the blade tip loss is proportional to the thrust coefficient. Results regarding performance data, chordwise loading, and spanwise loading are provided.

Study of size effect in sheet-stringer panels

Description: An investigation was conducted to determine whether there are significant size effects in compressive strength of large Z-stiffened sheet-stringer panels as compared with geometrically similar smaller models and thus to ascertain whether the prediction of the strength of large panels by model tests is reliable. The specimens studied were manufactured from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and included four representative types of panel designs, with full- and one-quarter-scale panels of each type.

Tensile properties of Inconel and RS-120 titanium-alloy sheet under rapid-heating and constant-temperature conditions

Description: From Summary: "Results are presented of rapid-heating tests to determine the tensile strength of Inconel and RS-120 titanium-alloy sheet heated to failure at uniform temperature rates from 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit per second under constant load conditions. Yield and rupture stresses, obtained by rapid heating, are compared with yield and ultimate stresses from elevated-temperature tensile stress-strain tests for 1/2-hour exposure. The applicability of master curves and t… more
