Beau Heyen
Beau Heyen is the youth minisiter at Cathedral of Hope, th world's latest church with a
primary outreach to LCBT people.
IWhat is the make-up of your youth program? How many LGBT youth versus children of LGBT
people does it have in it?
That majority right now is probably 90 percent of youth and children are of GLBT par-
ents. The other 10 percent — we do have some heterosexual families that come to the church
that have kids. We also have a handful of GLBT youth that come here as a way to get into the
GLBT community.
2 What are some challenges of being LGBT and raising children?
It's a very different role of a parent for straight parents compared to gay parents. The
biggest difference I have seen is that the lines of communication are more open between
parents that are GLBT and their youth.
3 How does that impact the youth?
It's a good thing and a bad thing. I find that kids of GLBT parents are usually a little
more open about themselves, who they are, what they believe. And it is great to have
youth that are a little more attuned to the world. But sometimes they forget when they are out
in public that the rest of the world isn't like them.
4 Do you have an example?
I took our youth group to a conference in Knoxville with 3,000 youth from across the
country. We would be carrying on conversations like we normally would do and people
would just stare at us like we were crazy because we were having what we considered normal
conversations. But they weren't tempered with social norms — which is wonderful. I think the
problem comes when sometimes GLBT parents almost come off as wanting to be more
friends. Sometimes they forget their role of being a parent and what that means. Even though
we are an alternative life style, we still have to role model appropriate boundaries and expec-
tations no matter what.
3 What services does C0H offer LGBT youth?
We want to become a resource to GLBT youth and make sure that they know we are here
for them for faith and guidance in life. That's why I'm working with Youth First Texas to
make sure they know we are an option. We also try to host different venues as much as possi-
ble. We did the Lawrence King vigil. We are looking at doing some more events like that that
are youth driven and really looking at GLBT youth.
