held in his honor in Bruce Hall
March 4. -
The" dining hall was packed with
visitors and faculty.
—Gov, Allaiv Shivers, representing
the state of Texas, spoke despite a
throat ailment.
"All Texas and the. world is
a better place for their having
p^ssetf"thrs' way,'' h^~said, speaking
of Dr.. and Mrs. McConnell.
He*tqld of the achievements of
Dr. McCimnell's administration and
the building program undertaken
during the 17-year tenure of the
president-emeritus. "I wonder what
you and I think he has accumu-
lated in doing it? He counts his
rewards in the character, of thou-
sands of boys and girls that have
been under his leadership."
Dr. Dossie' M. Wiggins, presi-
dent of Texas Technological col-
lege and of-*the council of presi-
dents of state-supported colleges,
spoke for the state schools.
"Sir,, I may say to you—for your
college—there "is and will continue
to be, a very tendei feeling because
of, the j^ob you are doing and what
youmean to the state," he con-
cluded. . f ,
Dr. Arthur Sampley, director
of libraries and poet laureate of
Texas* spoke for the faculty.
"This is a friendly college .be-
cause we have had a friendly presi-
dent," he said, "gecause • the col-

Concert Band to Tour
Four-State^ Circuit
North Texas State College's Con-
cert Band, under the direction of
Maurice McAdow of the music fac-
ulty, will tour eastward this month,
presenting nine concerts in eight
cities.
THe tour will include perform-
ances at Paris on March 16; Tex-
arkana, Ark., -on March 17; De
Queen, "Ark., March 17; Little
Rock, Ark., March 18;.-two con-
certs" lit
19; Northwestern State College at
Natchitoches, La., on March -20;
and &T~Longview and Carthage on
March 21.
New President Stresses
Duty, Responsibility
Pr. James Carl Matthews was Installed as the eighth
ident of North Texas State in impressive ceremonies in
the main auditorium on March 4,
Dr. Ben H. Wooten. chairman of the Board of Rpgpht.s,
inducted the new president before a near-capacity crowd that
included distinguished-visitors from all. over the Southwest.
In his installation address, President Matthews said, "Responsi-
bility
consider it my job to move on to an ever-greater North Texas distin-
guished by scholarship, friendliness, and grpwth."
Dr. Matthews stressed the importance of education, saying that
colleges and universities^ hold the key to our future development.
North Texas, he pointed out, began as a college to train teachers but
is now a multi-purpose institution. ' —
In citing the contribution and standing of each school and col-
lege at North Texas, he said, "Each function that has J>een added to
the college has added ■ strength/
NTSC Dedicates
8 New Buildings
''In dedicating eight new build-
ings at North Texas State College
the people of Texas are dedicating
their belief in ^he future," Dr.
Ralph McDonald told students,
faculty -members, and visitors here
March 4.
At dedication ceremonies in the
m ai n;"" auditorium, the. Bowling
Green university president said the
impressive building program just
completed brought "the eyes of
the—nation to Denton."
Built at a cost : of $5,500,000,
the new buildings #re the women's
gym, the men's gym,.football' stad-
ium, Masters Hall, .Quadrangle,
!library annex, education building,
arid Kendall Hall, new women's
dormitory.
Dr. McDonald was. introduced by
President J. C.-Matthewsr4n his
introductory speech, Dr. Matthews
said the completion of -so *Fnany~
new buildings in such a" short
period is unprecedented at North
Texas. •
"The College as Source of
Leadership" wa§ the topic of Dr.
McDonald's address. "Higher edu-
cation is the^ very fountainhed of
our progress," he declared. "Your
new buildings," he said, "are sym-
bolic of the leadership responsi-

Then, he declared, "We Amer-
icans are. convinced that education
is the one unfailing remedy "for

gun to use.
"With education we can accom-
plish almost anything," he de-
clared. "The American universal
free education.-system \yill be cited
as our outstandingjeontribution to
civilization."

J. McConnell. He called Dr. Mc-
Connell, whose voluntary retire-
ment last September put Dr. Mat-
thews in the president's chair, a

pints of blood to a Red Cross blood-
mobile "unit which was on the cart-
pus Feb, 27-29. ' . ^
The blood was processed at Port
Worth and sent directly to armed
forces medical units by plane.
