A Quarterly Publication of the Miniature Book Society, Inc.
New Series, Number 26 ISSN 0894-5489 July, 1995
President's LetterDear MBS Member:
It's Conclave time again. Delegates are expected from
Scotland, Russia, England, Germany and Australia (I think!).
What a great time it is going to be. Some were disappointed
in details of the gathering, but having run two Conclaves I
know how difficult the committee's job is in providing inter-
esting and economical events outside the hotel location.
As we leave our "infancy years" as a Society and move into
our "immature years" it will be more and more challenging to
maintain the novelty quotient in Conclaves. The true excite-
ment in any gathering of our Society is the opportunity to
meet new members and to see new developments in the world
of miniature books. There are several areas of the United
States with a good number of MBS members that have not
hosted the Society yet. Perhaps we can look forward to an
invitation in the near future? We are dependent on an invi-
tation from a host committee that is willing to shoulder the
numerous details.
Next year's Conclave will be announced at the Pasadena
assembly and promises to be quite something. If you haven't
attended one yet, do make the effort.
For many members, it is not possible to attend our annual
gatherings and the chief benefit of membership is the work we
do in publishing the Newsletter and our other publications, such as the Directory and books. This is a central focus for
our organization and one that is just now reaching its full
stride. Our recent difficulties in getting the Newsletter out in
a timely fashion are now being resolved. The production of
this periodical is a mammoth job depending upon the editor
to organize articles and materials provided by you, the mem-
bers. Information is the product of our Society. Shaping and
presenting that information and getting the finished work out
to the membership is a great responsibility calling for many
talents and much patience. Each of our editors has risen to
the task and we can be proud of the results.
I cannot stress the importance of our publishing efforts too
much, This is the way we can build and strengthen our mem-
bership. Scholarly and interesting articles and books pro-
duced by our Society will draw new members and will present
the world of miniature books to many who first hear of minia-
ture books m news programs or see the occasional article in a
newspaper or magazine. Each of our members has a special
area of interest and many are experts in their own right. It is
only when they are moved to share their knowledge with the
other members through the Newsletter or in books sponsored
by the Society that the pool of quality material on miniature
books can grow.
