ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank those who made this dissertation possible. As with many
similar situations, it is impossible to thank all those who have contributed to the success
of this endeavor in writing, especially considering the limited space allotted. So, in
short, thanks all, both those who are aware of this project and those unaware. You are
the motivation for the struggle to succeed.
My thanks go to Professors Keith W. Turner, James Swan, and David N.
Sanders, who provided insight and support through the doctoral process; to Marcia Ory
and Matthew L.Smith of the Texas A&M Rural School of Public Health, for the A Matter
of Balance/VLL dataset utilized in this project, and the support to push to completion; to
Doni Van Ryswyk of the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging, and Patti League,
of A Matter of Balance in MaineHealth's Partnership for Healthy Aging, for their support
and expertise with the "nuts and bolts" of their associated programs.
I wish also to acknowledge and thank the faculty and fellow students of the
Finnish Centre of Gerontology and the Nordic Master's of Gerontology (NordMaG)
program, of the University of Jyviskyli, Finland, for enduring my obsession with the
topic of falls and prevention. My thanks go especially to Virpi Uotinen, Pertti
Era,TorbjOrn Svensson (University of Lund, Sweden), Anne Rasanen, and Anne
Viljanen. Finally, I extend my thanks to my fellow graduate students, who, though
coming from such a broad variety of ages, backgrounds, and experiences, bonded
together to create and sustain viability in our quest of our goal. Kiitos! (Thank you) for
your support, from Charles-- "The Fall Guy."
