Measurements Through a Hot Cell Window Using Optical Tooling

Description: S>Optical tooling has been evaluated for the measurement of physical dimensions of radioactive parts through hot cell windows. Instruments were set up outside of a four foot thick lead glass window and by means of a grid plate which had been accurately scribed, a ''contour map'' or calibration chart of the window variations was recorded. Although the window was not specially selected, the readings were within 1.0% of the true dimension without using correction factors. One of the calibration ch… more

Stress Analysis of Bulk Effluent System Components in B and C Reactors

Description: This report presents a study of the stresses induced in the elbow and downcomer of the B and C Reactors (bulk effluent systems) by flow momentum and pressurization effects. It is desirable to ascertain the limitations on the bulk outlet temperatures and flow rates from a stress viewpoint; the elbow, top coverplate of downcomer, and top baffle plate being the most severely stressed components.

EVALUATION OF FISSION GAS ADSORPTION TRAPS FOR ORNL-MTR-44 LOOP EXPERIMENT

Description: A method of predicting the performance of fission gas adsorption traps containing activated charcoal is presented. This method is applied in the evaluation of the fission gas traps designed for use in the ORNL-MTR44 loop experiment. The method should also be applicable in evaluating fission gas traps contained in other reactor experiments. (auth)

Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

Description: The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Description: Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

Experiments on Antiprotons: Cross Sections of Complex Nuclei

Description: Experiments are described that have been designed to measure separately annihilation and reaction cross sections for antiprotons of approximately 450 MeV on oxygen, copper, silver, and lead. A new and more luminous spectrograph has been built for this experiment. The antiproton cross sections a r e compared with total proton cross sections, and are found to be larger by a factor varying from 1.74 for oxygen to 1.39 for silver. Calculations based on the optical model give a reasonable connection… more

THE EFFECT OF PLANT THERMAL EFFICIENCY ON THE COST OF NUCLEAR POWER

Description: Nuclear power cost is plotted versus thermal efficiency. The relationship is not limited to any particular reactor type and is applicable for any reactor system where steam is the working fiuid for the turbogenerator. (T- R.H-)

EFFECT ON POWER COST OF SUBSTITUTING ALUMINUM FOR ZIRCONIUM FUEL CLADDING IN A BOILING WATER REACTOR

Description: The substitution of Al-clad for Zr-clad fuel necessitates reducing the operating temperature. The amount of saving that must be made in fabrication and chemical reprocessing to overcome the cost of operating at reduced thermal efficiency is estimated for a boiling water reactor. (auth)

REACTION OF NITROGEN WITH NIOBIUM

Description: Reaction rates of niobium with nitrogen were determined gravimetrically from 675. to 875 deg C with a recording microbalance and volumetrically from 1100 to 1600 deg C with a modified Sieverts apparatus. Diffusion coefficients and terminal solubilities were determined from 800 to 1600 deg C by the concentration- gradient technique. Tne reaction of nitrogen with niobium follows a parabolic rate law at 675 to 1600 deg C. The expression for the diffusion coefficient for nitrogen in niobium at 800 … more

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

Description: The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the loca… more

Construction and Use of Charts in Design Studies of Gas Turbines

Description: "A method is presented for the computation and graphic representation of a series of possible turbine designs for any specific application. The use of a preliminary design chart is suggested for determining the number of stages and the effects of exit whirl and annular-area divergence on possible configurations. A specific design chart can then be made to aid in the study of the relations between turbine radius ratio, diameter, and significant design parameters such as Mach numbers, turning ang… more

A Method of Selecting the Thickness, Hollowness, and Size of a Supersonic Wing for Least Drag and Sufficient Bending Strength at Specified Flight Conditions

Description: Note presenting a consideration of a wing-selection problem sometimes encountered in the preliminary design of supersonic airplanes and missiles. The problem is to determine the span, section thickness ratio, and skin thickness or hollowness ratio of the wing of least drag when the plan form, section shape, wing lift requirement, and flight conditions are assumed known. An example of the application of the method to a diamond wing at Mach number 2.0 for a range of specified flight conditions is… more

Redox contamination: Terminal status report

Description: The Redox ruthenium contamination problem has two distinct phases; the environs contamination as a result of stack emissions, and the in-canyon contamination which controls time and cost factors for plant maintenance. On stack emissions, the probability of serious environs contamination exists so long as the batch-type, permanganate headend ruthenium volatilization process is used. Knowledge of the characteristics of volatilized ruthenium is not adequate today to give complete assurance that th… more

Local Instability of the Elements of a Truss-Core Sandwich Plate

Description: The charts presented give the compressive buckling coefficients for a single-truss-core and a double-truss-core sandwich plate. These charts cover a wide range of sandwich proportions and may be used for sandwiches with unequal faces. They apply to inplane compressive loads acting parallel or perpendicular to the core direction or for various combinations of these loads. (author).
