Choosing and implementing a computer system for plant lubrication: Nine steps to success

Description: Rapid advances in computer software offer may opportunities for increasing efficiency and productivity; however, choosing the right software package and achieving its full potential can be a challenging task. Lubrication engineers faced with the selection and implementation of a computer system will find that they can increase their chance of success when they follow the nine steps outlined in this paper. These steps provide a solid framework for managing the project through its full life-cycle… more

Estimate of earth media shear strength at the Nevada Test Site

Description: A method is presented of estimating the effective shear strength of the fractured rock that surrounds a nuclear detonation. To do this, we measure the cavity radii from previous detonations. We also use numerical computer codes to model the explosion phenomenology and develop the functional relationship between the normalized cavity displacement and the normalized shear strength of the rock. In this sense, the computer codes serve as replica models that are dimensionally analyzed to interpret t… more

Characterization of major waste data sources

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently initiated the Industrial Waste Reduction Program, which seeks to develop and commercialize waste reduction technologies and practices that will reduce industrial energy use. The Industrial Waste Reduction Program, like the other programs under DOE's Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT), works with industry to focus research and development resources according to industry needs and market opportunities. The Program consists of five fundamental elemen… more

Uranium miner lung cancer study. Progress report, July 1, 1976--July 1, 1977

Description: This study was initiated in 1957 by the U.S. Public Health and many facets of this project are reaching final objectives. Many new studies have developed in the course of this study and will continue. The projects supported by the Energy Research and Development Administration are of utmost importance and consist of: collection of material from uranium miners known to have cancer of the lung into a tumor registry; manual on pulmonary cytology; regression study of sputum cytological findings in … more

Aquifer tests near the Idaho Falls Foothills, Idaho

Description: Ground water pumping tests were performed in two wells located in the foothills east of Idaho Falls to determine the aquifer characteristics at these locations. These data were used to differentiate this aquifer from the Snake River Plain aquifer. The wells were pumped at rates of 11 and 14 gallons per minute with 0.03 and 0.04 ft of drawdown measured in the pumping wells. The transmissivity is estimated to be 525,000 gpd/ft and 450,000 gpd/ft, respectively. The hydraulic conductivity is 925 ft… more

Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Task I. Silicon material: investigation of the hydrogenation of SiCl/sub 4/. Fifth quarterly report

Description: Reaction kinetic measurements on the hydrochlorination of SiCl/sub 4/ and mg silicon metal in the presence of a copper catalyst were last reported as a function of reaction temperature, reactor pressure and H/sub 2//SiCl/sub 4/ ratio, 3 SiCl/sub 4/ + 2 H/sub 2/ + Si ..-->.. 4 SiHCl/sub 3/. The same reaction was repeated at a lower catalyst loading of 2 wt%. In the presence of 2 wt% cuprous chloride (based on silicon metal), the hydrochlorination reaction rate is doubled to give about the sam… more

LOFT emergency core coolant thermal analysis Class I review

Description: The LOFT Emergency Core Coolant Piping Thermal Analysis was checked to insure that the calculations made would conservatively satisfy the requirements in the LOFT technical specifications. Some of the boundary conditions used have not been shown to be conservative and require review and possible re-analysis. One of the thermal models used could not be clearly related to a specific part of the piping geometry and requires further explanation. The remainder of the models, the use of the SIMIR cod… more

Comparison between calculation and measurement of energy deposited by 800 MeV protons

Description: The High Energy Transport Code, HETC, was obtained from the Radiation Shielding Information Center (RSIC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and altered as necessary to run on a CDC 7600 using the LTSS software in use at LLNL. HETC was then used to obtain calculated estimates of energy deposited, for comparison with a series of benchmark experiments done by LLNL. These experiments used proton beams of various energies incident on well-defined composite targets in good geometry. In this report, tw… more

Defluoridation study for Boise geothermal water

Description: Methods of removing fluorides from water are reviewed and recommendations are made for treating geothermal water used by the Boise Geothermal Project, Boise, Idaho. The Boise geothermal water except for its high fluoride content would be high quality, suitable for primary drinking water. Fluoride ranges from about 15 to 25 mg/l in water from various wells in the Boise region where the Project plans to obtain hot water. Four techniques for removing fluorides from water have been studied extensiv… more

Near Term Hybrid Passenger Vehicle Development Program. Phase I, Final report. Appendix D: sensitivity analysis

Description: This report on the Sensitivity of Mission Analysis and Trade-off Studies provides an analysis of the sensitivity of the results of previous mission analysis and performance specification studies to the possible variations of the values of significant parameters as projected to the year 1985. These parameters include vehicle usage by purpose, driving cycles, trip lengths, ownership projections, and life-cycle costs. Results from exploratory drill hole UE2ce, Northwest Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, near the NASH Event

Description: Exploratory drill hole UE2ce was drilled in January 1977 to determine geologic and geophysical characteristics of this site. This report presents geophysical logs, lithology, geologic structure, water table measurements, and physical properties for this drill hole. The data are then extrapolated to the NASH site, an event in U2ce, 55.6 m due north of UE2ce.

New Mexico's energy resources '81. Annual report of Bureau of Geology in the Mining and Minerals Division of New Mexico Energy and Minerals Department

Description: Although production of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ declined only slightly in 1980, New Mexico's share of domestic production has declined from 48% in 1976 to 35% in 1980. Production projections indicate a continued decline in 1981 and lower production until at least 1984. New Mexico has 41% of total domestic reserves producible in the $50-per-lb cost category. In keeping with the anticipated steady depletion of reserves, production of crude oil in New Mexico was 69.9 million bls, a 6.3% decline in product… more

Parameterization of convective clouds, mesoscale convective systems, and convective-generated cirrus

Description: A level 2.5w deep convection updraft/downdraft parameterization scheme has been refined and tested against 3D simulations of sea-breeze generated convection over S. Florida. Cases for explicit simulation of MCSs in mid-latitudes and tropics have been encouraging. After a few refinements in those cases, fine resolution explicit simualtions of deep convection and mesoscale, stratiform clouds will be begun.

Beam loss by collimation in a neutralizer duct

Description: Beam fractions lost by collimation in a neutralizer duct are computed in x-x' phase space by using three examples of slab beam distributions under a broad range of duct dimensions, beam half-widths, and beam divergences. The results can be used to design compact neutralizers and to specify beam requirements. The computer code ILOST can be used under a broad range of beam conditions to compute the fraction lost by collimation.
