The Chemically Sensitive Individual: Validation by Criterion Group Identification

Description: The purpose of this study was to delineate those variables which are indicative of the patient whose health may be adversely affected by sensitivity to chemicals. In stage One analysis, the files of 10 chemically sensitive and 10 non-chemically sensitive patients were used to establish criterion variables as previously defined by legal proceedings prior to the study. Chemically sensitive and non-chemically sensitive patients were compared on all variables included in the study to empirically de… more

Respond Motets from Matins for the Dead by Robert Parsons

Description: The three respond motets from Matins for the Dead by Robert Parsons constitute an important part of the sacred Latin repertory of mid-sixteenth-century England, illustrating central features of the English mid-century style. Depression and Helplessness-Induced Cognitive Deficits Among the Aged

Description: To investigate the impact of helplessness-induction on cognitive performance in the aged, 66 community-residing elderly persons (X=72.5 years) were administered a word association task, disguised as a test of onterpersonal empathy, under a) response independent (RI), b) response dependent (RD) reinforcement, o c) control conditions. The subjects were categorized as either depressed or non-depressed. Three (treatments) by two (levels of depression) by two measurements (pre- vs. post-treatment) A… more

Formalization of Collection Development in Selected Medium-Sized Academic Libraries

Description: The degree of formalization of collection development(the dependent variable) in selected medium-sized academic libraries and six independent variables believed to be related to the dependent variable were examined. The formalization of collection development was measured by an index of five dimensions. The six independent variables examined were age of the library, number of graduate degrees offered by the parent institution, estimated years of growth potential in terms of available shelf spac… more

A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of the Relaxation Response and Personalized Relaxation Tapes in Medical Technology Students

Description: This investigation was a development of a Personalized Relaxation Technique which was used in a comparative study of the effectiveness of this technique with the Relaxation Response, a popular relaxation method. The purpose of the study were (1) to design a Personalized Relaxation Technique and (2) to determine if this Personalized Relaxation Technique is as effective as the Relaxation Response. From the analysis of the data, no significant difference was found tin the three groups. Therefore, … more

Toxicological Assessment Studies of the in Vitro and in Vivo Effects of Methyl 2-Chloro-2-Propenoate [Methyl (α)-Chloroacrylate]

Description: the toxic effects resulting from acrylic monomer exposure can pose as occupational risk factors for those involved in the manufacture, distribution, and use of the monomer and as potential risk factors for those accidentally exposed. This study is a toxicological assessment of the in vivo (intact animal) and in vitro (isolated human cell culture) responses to acute methyl (α)-chloroacrylate (MCA) exposure.

Identification of Enzymatic Processing of Protein Bound Mono(ADP- Ribose)

Description: Enzymatic activity has been identified in cultured cells which catalyzes the removal of intact mono(ADP-ribose) residues which are bound to protein at arginine. Other activities have been detected which catalyze the removal of ADP-ribose via the sequential removal of AMP and ribose-5-phosphate.

Effect of Ribavirin on Phenotypic Reversion of Mammalian cells Transformed by Temperature-Sensitive Mutants of Avian Sarcoma Virus

Description: The effect of ribavarin (1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide), a synthetic nucleoside, on a series of cellular properties which characterize the transformed state was studied using normal rat kidney cells (NRK) and cloned derivatives transformed by a wild type avian sarcoma virus, B77-NRK, and by a temperature-sensitive mutant of the virus, LA31-NRK.

Morphology of Azotobacter Vinelandii Grown on Nutrient Agar

Description: This research deals with the changes in cellular morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii cultured on nutrient agar. In particular, this study is concerned with the formation of intracellular particles and a description of their size and sequence of appearance. Changes in morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii grown on nutrient agar are contrasted photographically with morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii grown on Burk's nitrogen free medium.

Enkephalin Metabolism in Exercise Stress

Description: Investigators have suggested that opiate peptide hormones released during exercise stress may play an important role in athletic performance or perceived effort. Their enzymatic inactivation in the periphery is of considerable interest since the opiate peptides may be regulated by enkephalin hydrolyzing enzyme (EHA). In this study, the relationship between maximal aerobic capacity (VO_2max) and EHA activity was examined in two distinct fitness groups. When the metabolic capacity was evaluated i… more

The Effects of Goal Difficulty and Information Feedback on the Performance of an Endurance Task

Description: Few studies in the sporting realm have been conducted to verify the findings from industrial or organizational settings regarding the strong positive motivational effects of goal setting (Locke et al., 1981). Therefore, the purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effects of three levels of goal difficulty and two levels of feedback on the performance of males undertaking an endurance task. Performance results were analyzed using a 2 x 3 x 2 (feedback x goal difficulty x trials… more

Conformation-Activity Studies of Pyrethroid Alcohols

Description: The synthesis and insecticidal activity of certain alcohols (hydroxymethyldibenzofurans, hydroxymethyldibenzothiophenes and some of their ⍺-cyano derivatives), esterified with trans-chrysanthemic acid, were investigated. The preparation of these planar alcohol moieties was undertaken to study conformation-activity effects in insecticides of the pyrethroid type. The synthesis of final ester products employed two methods. One was the direct condensation of the appropriate alcohol with chrysanthem… more
