The Significance of Urine Uranium Excretion Data

Description: Abstract: Urine uranium excretion data for persons exposed to uranium by inhalation are analyzed Data from both chronic and single massive exposures are included, and a generalized excretion pattern, applicable to any uranium compound absorbed by inhalation, is proposed. ...It is shown that it is not usually practical to use urine samples to monitor individual exposures. Such an evaluation is possible only with a suitable series of samples collected at known intervals past the exposure. It is also shown that it is not possible to determine chronic exposure levels from routine urine samples. Chronic exposure levels and body burdens can only be estimated with a sample series collected two or more weeks after the termination of exposure.

The Sequential Analysis of Ten Nuclides Occurring in Long Range Fallout Debris

Description: Abstract : Methods for the chemical separation of strontium, barium, cesium, cerium, yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and tungsten from complex matrices are described. Procedures for the radiometric determination of the longer-lived isotopes of these elements are outlined. Inert carriers are added and the sample is dissolved by fusion with sodium carbonate. The melt is leached first with water and then with hydrochloric acid. The elements are recovered from these fractions by a series of wet chemical and ion exchange procedures, and gravimetric and radiometric determinations performed.

Low Background Nuclear Counting Equipment

Description: Abstract: Both direct and coincidence counting apparatus are described. The elimination of cosmic ray events by coincidence plus gamma ray shielding permits the reduction of counting rates far beyond that obtainable with shielding alone. By selection of materials and development of new components and techniques, the residual background count of beta counting equipment can be reduced to a very low value. Geiger counter equipment for routine laboratory measurements is described, have a background count of 0.7 c/m. Scintillation counters are shown to have a background of 0.2 c/m at 30% efficiency. A portable Geiger counter with a 3.7 c/m background is also described.

Analog and Digital Readout on an IBM Output Writer

Description: Abstract: A control system to provide digital printing and to plot an analog trace on an electric operated IBM model 11C Output Writer is described. The Digital mode of operation translates multidigit numbers through a set of commands to print each digit serially, then presents them to the output writer in a time sequence. The Analog mode of operation converts a d.c. input voltage to a digital number and by tab and space bar commands translates the carriage horizontally a distance proportional to this number.

Filters to Provide Nearly Monoenergetic X-Rays

Description: Abstract: Four filters for use with a 250 KVP pulsating X-ray machine were constructed to calibrate radiation detection instruments in the energy region below 200 KEV. Approximately monoenergetic beams of 63, 105, 150, and 180 KEV were produced. The spectral distribution was computer suing the formula of Kulenkampff. The energies were found to drop rapidly from the peak values. The average values were checked from absorption curves obtained experimentally and found to deviate from the computed peak values by 10%.

Some Variable Contributors to Natural Background

Description: It was suggested that radon concentrations in air and potassium fertilizers on the ground contribute appreciably to natural background radiation levels. The effect on natural background gamma radiation from radon and its associated daughters in equilibrium and from potassium in fertilizers has been calculated and found to be negligible. Background radiation intensities have been assumed to be on the order of 10 [mu]rad/hr.

Radiation Survey, Columbia University, Van De Graaff

Description: Abstract: During March 1958, representatives of the health and Safety Laboratory, New York Operations Office, visited Columbia University to make stray radiation measurement at the Van de Graff accelerator. A radiation survey was performed at the Van de Graaff electrostatic generator at Columbia University. The survey results do not indicate a particular need for additional shielding at this time. It is recommended that the analyzer area of the beam room should not be occupied during beam operations and the present interlock system should be modified by the installation of a photocell interlock as shown on the included plan.

Energy Absorption Spectrum in Air of Cosmic Ray Mu Mesons at Sea Level

Description: Abstract: "The energy absorption spectrum of cosmic ray mu mesons at sea level was inferred from the omnidirectional momentum, the latter being obtained from the directional intensities of muons in various energy intervals at zenith angles of 0, 30, 60, and 68 degrees. ...From the energy absorption spectrum, a sea level muon dose rate of 2.23 microrads per hour was determined. This is consistent with measurements of the total cosmic dose rate."
