Plate 8. Eagle and Charley River Area: Sample Locations and Generalized Geology

Description: From addendum: Two types of analyses for uranium in the stream-sediment samples are presented. One split of the stream-sediment samples was sent to Resource Associates of Alaska's laboratory, where they were analyzed for U by the fluormetric method after acid extraction. This is the method employed for U by most laboratories. The completeness of uranium extraction unavoidably varies with the particular type of uranium-bearing minerals present and possibly with the amount of iron, manganese, and carbonaceous material present, which can interfere with the extraction. Analyses by the method are shown in the text and appendix columns with the designation "RAA."

The Pathogenetic Significance of Splenomegaly in Vaques' Disease (Hemoglobin turn-over and corpuscular camotic resistance)

Description: The observations made in cases of splenectomy allow one to discount the possibility that the tumor of the spleen might possess the peculiar property of absorbing Jongo red that has been placed in circulation for the determination of the total volume of plasma.

Study of the Influence of the Form of the Magnetic Field on the Function of the Cyclotron

Description: This study enabled the author to analyse the operation of the cyclotron in great detail than it is possible by means of the elementary theory. Apart from the numerical results which one obtains and which make possible a predetermination of the characteristics to be used, the precise study of the phenomena which occur in the course of the accelerations helps towards a better physical understanding of these phenomena which is not to be regarded lightly,

Size and Form of Particles from Viscosity and Double Refraction of Flow

Description: In the course of recent years numerous investigations have been made concerning the change in the viscosity of a solvent when colloidal or high molecular substances are brought in solution, and with regard to double refraction of flow, which is observed when a gradient of velocity is produced in such a solution. While in the case of viscosity the results obtained had only limigted validity the oblong shape of colloidal particles is generally deducible from the double refraction of flow. In this paper it will be attempted to make quantitative observations of both phenomena.

About the Importance of Unstable Peroxides of Green Leaf of Plant for Photosynthesis

Description: A. N. Back expressed a hypothesis about the participation of organic peroxide in the process of photosynthesis. Experimental data on this question were very few. This article provides a method of investigation to support the hypothesis.

A New Determination of the Molecular Dimensions

Description: In this study it will be shown that the size of the molecules of a substance in a non-dissociated dilute solution can be determined from the internal friction between the substance and the solvent and from the diffusion of the dissolved substance, if the volume of a molecule of the substance going into solution is large compared to the volume of a molecule of the solvent. A molecule of the dissolved substance will move in the solvent and will influence the internal friction approximately like a rigid body suspended in the solvent.

The Activation of the Rare Earths by Thermal Neutrons

Description: The present knowledge of artificial radio-activity is more spotty for the rare earths than for any other region of the periodic table. The chief reason for this is the difficulty of obtaining sufficiently pure samples or at any rate such of well-known composition. Rare earthers were investigated through the activation by thermal neutrons.

The Chloride of Praseodymium

Description: Praseodymium chloride has been prepared in the form of large green crystals. In order to prepare praseodymium oxide in the pure state, the author precipitated the oxalate from a nitric solution instead of a hydrochloric solution.

On the Thermochemistry of the Rare Earths III : The Heats of Solution and Formation of the Anhydrous Iodides of the Rare Earths

Description: In a previous report (NP-2010) the authors reported on the heats of solution of the metals and the anhydrous chlorides of the rare earths as well as on the heats of formation of the chlorides. The variation of the heats of solution of the chlorides suggested an investigation of the bromides and the iodides which is reported in this publication.
