The Parabolic-Linear Oxidation Rate Transition Theory

Description: A new theoretical concept is proposed to account for the type of oxidation followed by metals upon exposure to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperatures. The hypothesis is based on the relative rates of oxidation and re crystallization of the tarnish coating. if the re crystallization rate of the oxide coating formed on the surface is greater than the oxidation rate of the metal, the coating will be protective and hence will follow the parabolic equation. If the reverse situation is true… more

Use of Discharge Tubes in Spectrochemical Analysis

Description: While this survey of discharge tube sources probably has not yielded information of much direct interest to the great majority of analysts, it seems probable that these sources will become of greater interest as they become better developed and more demand is created for extension of spectrochemical methods to non-metallic samples.

A Self-Delayed Coincidence Circuit

Description: On the assumption that the light pulses from the light guide of a scintillation counter consist of single, widely separated photons, it should be possible to reject them by counting only pulses, with some loss of counting efficiency. An alternate approach is to use a light-splitter, dividing the light between two photomultipliers in coincidence. Many variations of light splitters were tried.

Investigation of the Shape of Beta Spectra at the Low-Energy End

Description: The applicability of proportional counting to low-energy p-spectra has been demonstrated. As yet, however, nothing has been primarily directed toward the general problem of spectral shapes at the low-energy end. This report attempts to address that and to resolve questions about it experimentally.

Content of Human Tissues in Eleven Trace Minerals

Description: The project involves analysis of a sufficient number of selected cadavers, and certain tissues therefrom, to indicate the normal occurrence of the following trace minerals in human tissues, concentrations of them that may be considered innocuous, and the variation in these concentrations to be expected with advancing age: boron, beryllium, cobalt, gallium, mercury, polonium, radium, strontium, thorium, uranium and zirconium.

A Study of Convex Sets in Abstract Linear Spaces Where No Topology is Supposed. II.

Description: A purely geometrical proof of the hyperflat of support-theorum is indicated, and the Hahn-Banach extension theorum for linear functionals is derived therefrom. An example is given of two linearly closed (and linearly bounded) convex bodies such that their convex hull is not linearly closed. An other example is given of two linearly bounded convex bodies whose convex hull is not linearly bounded.

A Study of the Permeability of Plastic Membranes to Gases

Description: It was the primary object of this research to obtain data on the rate of gas permeation through a number of selected plastic membranes at different temperatures and, in particular, to note the effect of varying amounts of plasticizer in the membrane upon the rate of gas permeation.

Progress Report on AEC Contract No. AT(40-1)-1076-, 1. The Development of Electromechanical Equipment to Facilitate the Search for Events in Nuclear Emulsions

Description: This portion of the program under the contract has been completed. Subsequent to the preliminary report a new design was drawn up and constructed which embodies highly desirable features indicated by use of the first model. These are summarized here.

The Hydrogen Fluoride Solvent System: Polarographic Studies

Description: This paper presents preliminary work on the polarographic determination of redex potentials in liquid hydrogen fluoride. The dropping mercury cathode with a mercury pool reference anode proved to be the most practical for the initial experiments. Reduction waves with a rotating platinum cathode versus a mercury pool reference anode gave at best highly inconclusive results for all systems investigated, as did also oxidation waves with a rotating platinum anode versus a hydrogen reference cathode. more

Progress Report: Project No. 2 (Contract No. AT(11-1)-72), Providing for Research in the Separation of Gases by Diffusion Through Permeable Membranes

Description: This report covers the work performed since February 1950. A great deal of effort was concentrated during the summer months when most of the personnel was able to work almost full-time on the project. The material is presented in two parts: 1. literature status, and 2. investigational status.

The Isotope Effect. III, the Reaction of Acetone-1-C14 With Alkaline Hypoiodite

Description: A small but real isotope effect was found when acetone-1-C14 was treated with alkaline hypoiodites; the iodeform contained more than half and the acetate less than half of the activity of7 the original acetone. The effect is in the opposite direction from most of the other isotope effects so far reported, the C12-C14 bond apparently being more easily broken than the C12-C12 in this case. The magnitude of the effect is of the order of 3 to 6%.

Transient Thermal Stresses in Circular Discs

Description: When a circular disk (of radius R.) is subjected at time t=0 to an edge temperature [formula] it experiences a temperature transient and a stress transient. An appraisal of these transients is the main objective of this study.

Time Resolution of Scintillation Counters: Supplementary Report, Contract N-7405-eng-26 Sub 308

Description: The purpose of this report is to estimate the time error inherent in scintillation counters using the presently available crystals and multipliers, in order to obtain an indication of the direction in which improvements should be made to obtain better time resolution. The first part of this discussion concerns itself with the performance of crystals and multipliers. This is followed by a brief discussion of the effects of various factors in the multiplier which contribute to time errors. The co… more

Studies on Factors Controlling Cholesterol Synthesis in the Body

Description: Measurement of the relative rates of turnover and of cholesterol synthesis in intact animals have been made by a technique described as 'flash labelling'. The origin of plasma cholesterol has been investigated by the approach of measuring plasma cholesterol synthesis in the hepatectonized dog. Studies are also in progress on the role of hormones in regulating endogenous cholesterol synthesis and its distribution between blood and tissues in the hope of obtaining a clearer picture of this homeos… more

Radiosensitivity of Haploid and Diploid Habrobracon During Pupal Development

Description: Haploids and diploids of the parasitic wasp Habrobracon were exposed to x-rays during various stages of pupal development in order to test for differential radio sensitivity. The ability to emerge from the cocoon was taken as the criterion of viability. Dosage-eclosion curves show that diploids are more resistant than haploids at all stages of pupal development. During the earlier stages, diploids are about three times as radio resistant as haploids, while during the later stages the differenti… more

Special Report of Problem on AEC Contract AT(30-1)-1024: Measurement of the Dielectric Constant of Molten Slag

Description: Two methods of measuring the dielectric constant of molten slag are described and investigated. The conventional standing wave method is shown to be impractical for the range of conductivities expected. The second method utilizes the attenuation of the electromagnetic energy as it propagates into the slag. This method appears to offer a reasonable chance of success if extreme accuracy is not expected. It suffers from the limitation that the conductivity must be known from some other source.

Lymphoid Lesions In Poliomyelitis

Description: Examination of 50 autopsied cases of human poliomyelitis showed prominent hyperplastic and inflammatory changes in the lymphoid tissues of 41 which aside from the central nervous system damage was the most frequent and severe lesions observed. Histologically germinal centers showed prominent degenerative and regenerative alterations, fluid transudation, giant cell formation, and rare inclusion bodies, all consistent with virus effects.

The Metabolism of Soy Bean Leaves. IV. On The Turnover of Chlorophyll

Description: Evidence has been given and countered that the chlorophyll concentration of higher plants is variable, reaching a minimum shortly after noon. The authors have attempted to elucidate this problem, which includes the question of the rate of turnover of chlorophyll, by the use of C14. The results indicate an undoubted minor variation in the chlorophyll content of soybean and stringless bean leaves throughout a day, the metabolic turnover however is of a periodicity and magnitude more complex and p… more
