Development Program for Increased Output in the Garigliano Nuclear Reactor. Quarterly Report No. 2

Description: The United States and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), on May 29, and June 18, 1958, signed an agreement which provides a basis for co-operation in programs for the advancement of the peaceful applications of atomic energy. The work described in this report represents the Joint U.S.-Euratom effort. The over-all development program is designed to obtain the test data and operating experience necessary to eventually realize a 50 percent increase in the output of the Garigliano Nuclear Power Station located at Sessa Aurunca (Campania, Italy). Two tasks are in progress: Task III-F involves the preparation of test specimens of reactor vessel material for irradiation; Task IV consists of the formulation of specification for a complete data logging and computer system.

Sigma Plug Welding of Spun-Over Fuel Cans

Description: Summary: Purpose of the investigation is to improve the peripheral welding of the brazed joint at the top of aluminum-sheathed fuel slugs by forming the can over the top of the cap and welding the resulting center opening. This investigation looked at the applicability of the inert-gas-shielded, consumable electrode process, using commercially available equipment, for producing a weld closure in spun-over fuel cans. Using commercially available sigma welding equipment, no practical combination of welding conditions was found which resulted in satisfactory leak-tight closures in spun-over canned fuel slugs. It is recommended that plug welding of spun-over closures by the sigma welding process be dismissed from consideration for start-up at the Savannah River Plant.

Dibutyl Carbitol Solvent Extraction of Polonium-210 from Nitric Acid Solutions of Irradiated Bismuth

Description: Abstract: "A continuous countercurrent solvent extraction process utilizing dibutyl carbitol as the extractant has been developed for separating 210Po from large amounts of associated bismuth. Both laboratory and pilot plant data demonstrate the process is a suitable headend step in recovery of kilogram quantities of 210Po. Typically, the extraction process recovers over 98% of the 210Po, essentially free from bismuth (Bi DF>1500), in a dilute HNO3 solution suitable as a starting material for final concentration and purification steps."

The Fabrication of Subassemblies for the Supercritical-Water Reactor

Description: In studies of the fabrication of fuel subassemblies for the supercritical-water reactor, the limited ductility of stainless steel-UO₂ fuel sheet made the fabrication of corrugated-flat-plate-type subassemblies impractical. A fabricable MTR-type assembly, 5/8 in. square and 30 in. long, was developed. Methods for edge cladding fuel sheet were developed and a brazing alloy, GE-75, was found to be corrosion resistant in supercritical water.

Magnetic Acceleration of a Plasma by a Rail Source

Description: Abstract: "Two parallel wires close together with an arc between them form a hairpin-type of current configuration which should magnetically propel the plasma of the arc. By the time-of-flight measurements with probes it has been demonstrated that directed translational energies of 290 ev can be imparted to deuterons in a plasma produced by a high-current pulsed arc at the tips of two titanium wires loaded with deuterium. It is believed that three deuterons are actually magnetically propelled."
