1000-Mwe SGR. 90% ThO₂, 10% UO₂ Alternate Fuel Core Thermal and Hydraulic Analysis

Description: The thermal and hydraulic core parameters were determined using the SORTD I code for 90% ThO/sub 2/, 10% UO/sub 2/ fuel both for (1) a core containing 592 fuel elements corresponding to the UC reference core with a maximum UC temperature of 2000 deg F and (2) a core containing 784 fuel elements corresponding to a UC core with a maximum UC temperature of 1750 deg F. Eighteen rod elements with 2.5 in./sup 2/ and 3.5 in./sup 2/ fuel areas, and 30 rod elements with 4.5 in./sup 2/ and 5.5 in./sup 2/ fuel areas are analyzed for 8 cases. (auth)

Amine Extraction of Plutonium From Nitric Acid Solutions Loading and Stripping Experiments

Description: Information is presented on a suitable amine processing system for plutonium nitrate. Experiments with concentrated plutonium nitrate solutions show that trilaurylamine (TLA) - xylene solvent systems did not form a second organic phase. Experiments are also reported with tri-noctylamine (TnOA)-xylene and TLA-Amsco - octyl alcohol. Two organic phases appear in both these systems at high plutonium nitrate concentrations. Data are tabulated from loading and stripping experiments. (J.R.D.)

Analysis of Current Distribution in Electrolytic Cells With Flowing Mercury Cathodes

Description: An idealized model is postulated embodying the essential features of industrial caustic-chlorine cells with horizontal flowing-mercury cathodes. This model is examined in detail, and relations expressing the local anode potential, cathode potential, and ohmic potential drop in the electrolyte in terms of local current density and other parameters are established. These relations are combined to give a system of equations relating current density at any location along the cell to applied total potential and to operating conditions in the cell upstream of the point in question. Numerical solutions of these equations for several cases of cell operating conditions are carried out on a digital computing machine. The effects of changes in operating parameters upon average current density, individual electrode potentials, and current distribution are evaluated. (auth)

Analysis of the stored energy distribution in D-reactor

Description: The purpose of this document is to characterize, as completely as possible, the stored energy distribution in D Reactor as of March 1958, the date of the last stored energy survey and to estimate the temperature rises which can be expected to occur during a stored energy release. D Reactor was chosen for this study only because it represents one of the oldest operating Hanford reactors and not because of any circumstances peculiar to this reactor. 14 refs., 13 figs.

Annealing of Radiation Induced Defects in Fused Silica

Description: Technical report describes how glasses and crystals subjected to ionizing radiation develop absorption bands and become colored. The coloring of defects can be used to determine how nuclear reactor induced defects anneal out or disappear as an irradiated sample is heated.

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers

Description: From introduction: "In this paper the adaptation of the wax lab surface vibratory polisher is described. The wax lap requires little maintenance during the life of the lap. It is not necessary to remove any of the holding devices on the bowl to clean and recondition the lap. The bowl is merely washed out, recharged and placed in operation. The wax lap will not wrinkle or tear, nor is it necessary to change it each day such as the silk or nylon cloths."

APPR-1 STARTUP ANALYSIS

Description: The Army Package Power Reactor (APPR-1) control system was analyzed to find its response to a startup accident. The system was found to be adequate, at 0.086%/sec rod withdrawal, for operation of at least twice the rated power. (C.J.G.)

The Attenuation of Natural Environmental Radiation by an Automobile

Description: Report presenting a large number of measurements of natural environmental radiation in various parts of the United States using a 20-liter air filled polyethylene-walled ionization chamber at atmospheric pressure. The ionization current was measured with a vibrating reed electrometer connected as a continuously reading voltmeter driving a pen recorder" (p. 1).

The Biological Effects of heavy Cosmic Ray Particles

Description: Technical report investigates creating a microbeam of deuterons to simulate cosmic rays and the results of brain irradiation, irradiation of the eye, and irradiation of hair follicles of mice. The report's conclusion was that "astronauts exposed to heavy primary particles over a period of some weeks would be expected to develop gray hairs, but this is the only significant biological damage they would suffer."
