EOCR Control Rod and Driver Fuel Hydraulic Tests

Description: Report discussing the results of experiments on an EOCR prototype control rod, control rod drive, and driver fuel assembly that were extensively tested in 500 deg F Santowax and 132 deg F water. These tests not only established the operating characteristics of these assemblies but also revealed a number of deficiencies in the various components. It includes descriptions of the control rod, control rod drive, and driver fuel assembly together with descriptions of their method of operation.

Radiometallurgical examination of K5E fuel failures with behive growth in spires

Description: On September 18, 1967, KE Reactor experienced,a failure in a K5E fuel element in tube 2863, exposure 634 Mwd/t. On September 24, 1967, two additional failures occurred. All of these elements, clad with X8001 alloy were from the same canning lot. All fuel elements from this canning lot were termed rupture-prone and were discharged. The elements from five columns including column 2863, but neither columns 2865 nor 3256, were sent to 105-C Basin Fuel Examination Facility for further examination. An incipient failure was found and sent to Radiometallurgy in an effort to determine the cause of failure. During the course of examination, the spire was found to contain beehive-shaped growths approximately 1/8-inch high and 1/8-inch 9 in diameter at the base. The incipient failure contained four of these growths protruding from the spire wall. Closer examination showed that the spire contained numerous other ``beehives`` in less advanced stages of growth. The ruptured element from 2863 also contained a ``beehive``. The second section of this report covers examination of several ``beehives`` and presents information concerning the possible cause or causes of growth.

IBM-704 CODES FOR PREDICTING THE RESPONSE OF GAMMA-RAY SCINTILLATION COUNTERS

Description: A manual for Operating several codes for an IBM-704 to calculate the pulse-heat response functions for gamma-ray scintiliation counters is presented. Using . the Monte Carlo method of computation, the codes will calculate the pulse-heat response function of xylene, Csl, or Nal counters of various geometrical configurations with cylindrical symmetry. Thermal Stability of Gadolinum Nitrate Solution at High Temperature

Description: During a feasibility study of auxiliary shutdown systems for the Spert II and Spert III reactor facilities, salts possessing high neutron absorption cross sections were considered for use in water soluble poison injection systems, and gadolinium nitrate appeared promising. Tests were carried out in a high pressure static autoclave to determine the stability of gadolinium nitrate solution at elevated temperature. At temperatures of 300 deg F and above, the solution decomposed with formation of a white precipitate. It was concluded that gadolinium nitrate is unsuitable for use as a soluble poison in high temperature, watermoderated reactor systems. (auth)

INLINE DENSIMETER FOR PULSED COLUMN LIQUID DENSITY, PULSE AMPLITUDE, AND PULSE FREQUENCY MEASUREMENTS

Description: S>An inline densimeter was fabricated and tested in the laboratory. When operated in a range of 1.000 to 1.200 g/cc, an accuracy of plus or minus 0.2% in the mid-point of the range was easily achieved. The instrument also measures pulse amplitude and pulse frequency when used on a pulsating flow. A long life with high reliability is expected because of the simple all-welded construction and highly reliable electronic system. (auth)

An IBM 704 Subroutine for Trapezoidal Integration With Controller Error (Trice)

Description: A description of the IBM-704 subroutineTRICE, which evaluates a single integral by means of the trapezoidal rule approximation is given. In the calculational procedure, the integration step is halved until the desired degree of convergence is reached or until a preset maximum number of steps is exceeded. Amine Extraction of Plutonium From Nitric Acid Solutions Loading and Stripping Experiments

Description: Information is presented on a suitable amine processing system for plutonium nitrate. Experiments with concentrated plutonium nitrate solutions show that trilaurylamine (TLA) - xylene solvent systems did not form a second organic phase. Experiments are also reported with tri-noctylamine (TnOA)-xylene and TLA-Amsco - octyl alcohol. Two organic phases appear in both these systems at high plutonium nitrate concentrations. Fission Product Distribution in ORR Fuel Elements

Description: The gamma rays emitted by ORR fuel elements and by the fuel section of shim rods are measured as a function of position along the elements with a very small graphite ionization chamber. Comparison of the fuel burnup calculated from the gamma measurements and by the flux-time method shows good agreement. This means that the gammaray distribution measurements could be a good method of determining the U/sup 235/ consumption in fuel elements. Distributions of the macroscopic absorption cross section and the infinite multiplication factor along fuel elements are computed from the gamma dose rate distribution. The limited usefulness of the shim rod fuel section is discussed in the last section. (auth)
