Description: Results are reported from a series of experimental highexplosive shots under inversion conditions at the Nevada Test Site which were made in an attempt to refine blast prediction techniques. Applications of the data in determinations of the amount of energy which remains in the blast wave as it reaches acoustic level and in determinations of the magnitude of the reflection factor when the blast wave strikes the ground are discussed. Survey of Nonmetallic Liquid Coolants for Nuclear-Power Piles

Description: A comprehensive survey of the literature was made in an effort to identify nonmetallic materials of possible usefulness as liquid coolants. Materials having maximum melting points of 1000 deg F and boiling points of l200 deg F were considered, but boiling points above 2200 deg F were preferred. Melting points, boiling points, densities, heat capacities, and thermal conductivities were tabulated. Description: Recording of Hugh Le Caine's Invocation. The piece opens with a trio of three recorded sounds: a glass that is broken with a hammer, a ping-pong ball hitting a racket, and a drop of water. These sounds are the "instruments" used throughout the piece. Drips are configured as fast ascending and descending glissandi. Ninety nine Generators

Description: Recording of Hugh le Caine's Ninety nine Generators. The title refers to the 99 organ sound generators sensitive keys - a separate generator for each note of the keyboard that can all be operated simultaneously. Le Caine here uses a resonance pedal and a device that can change the pitch to produce a vibrato or long glissandi impossible to achieve on an organ. The particular reverb of this piece is caused by the unusual acoustics of the place where it was realized.

Dripsody

Description: Recording of Hugh le Caine's Dripsody. It is an study for variable speed recorder. It was composed in one night. Le Caine used a recording of a drop of water falling into a bucket, which he re- recorded different speeds, obtaining the heights of a pentatonic scale. Nature of atmospheric dust. Progress report to January 15, 1955

Description: Optical microscopic examination of air- and rain-borne dust shows most of the particles to be less than one micron in diameter. Electron microscopic examination of the same dust shows predominantly clusters of particles whose individual diameters are in the range 200 to 1000 A. The residue obtained by filtering rain water through a millipore filter is found to be slightly radioactive in more than half the cases observed.

Dissolution of aluminium oxide as a regulating factor in aqueous aluminum corrosion

Description: The solubility of aluminum corrosion product in contact with metallic aluminum in deionized water has been determined over the range 80 to 350/sup 0/C. Evidence is presented to show that oxide dissolution results in the formation of a porous oxide on aluminum exposed in refreshed dynamic systems. Large-scale low-speed wind-tunnel tests of a model having a 60 degree delta horizontal canard control surface and wing to obtain static-longitudinal-stability and canard surface hinge-moment data

Description: Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of a model equipped with a 60 degree delta wing and a 60 degree delta horizontal all-movable canard control surface to determine the stability, control, and canard-surface hinge-moment characteristics at low speeds and at a Reynolds number of 9 x 10(exp 6). Two longitudinal positions of the canard surface were tested. Results regarding lift and pitching moment, drag, and hinge moment are provided.

Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls.
