Radiologic Hazards Predicted for a Given Height Burst of an Atomic Bomb

Description: Abstract: An appraisal is made of the radiologic hazard created by a 1000-ft. high air burst of a nominal sized nuclear bomb. Three sets of graphs are included which show the relations between dose rate (milliroentgens per hour), time post-shot, and distance from Ground Zero for a soil having given constituents. Estimates are given for fall-out activity (gamma) for distances up to about 200 miles from Ground Zero immediately after fall-out. It is pointed out that the radiologic hazard due to fall-out in the example cited is insignificant; further, that the radiologic hazard from similar nuclear bombs bursting at different heights above the ground will vary to a considerable extent.

Chemical Properties of Sodium Triethylhydroborate and Sodium Triisopropoxyhydroborate

Description: Technical report abstract: Sodium hydride and triethylborane react to form sodium triethylhydroborate, NaBH(C2H5)3. This compound, a liquid at rooom temperature, was found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. A study was made of the thermal decomposition of sodium triethylhydroborate and its behavior toward boron trifluoride, boron trichloride, methyl borate, carbon dioxide, silane, and ethylene. Sodium triisopropoxyhydroborate, NaBH(OC3H7)3, was prepared and also found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. The reactions of this compound with methyl borate, triethylborane, silicon tetrachloride, and boron trichloride were investigated.

Chattanooga shale investigations along the Sequatchie anticline of Tennessee and Alabama

Description: "The results of an investigation of the Chattanooga shale along the Sequatchie anticline of Tennessee and Alabama are summarized in this report. The project was of an exploratory nature designed to 1) obtain fresh core samples from areas where analyses of outcrop samples showed uranium contents as high or higher than those of the Youngs Bend area in DeKalb County, Tenn.; 2) learn more about the distribution and thickness of the shale in those areas and, if necessary, do some geologic mapping; 3) observe general topographic, drainage, and geologic conditions that would affect the mining of shale."
