THE OXIDATION OF MERCURY BY NITRIC ACID

Description: The oxidation of Hg in HNC/sub 3/ was investigated. An empirical rate law, oxidation rates, and Hg species in solution were determined. A reaction mechanism based on the presence of nitrous acid can be interpreted in terms of the rate expression derived. (auth)

Drag Minimization for Wings and Bodies in Supersonic Flow

Description: "The minimization of inviscid fluid drag is studied for aerodynamic shapes satisfying the conditions of linearized theory, and subject to imposed constraints on lift, pitching moment, base area, or volume. The problem is transformed to one of determining two-dimensional potential flows satisfying either Laplace's or Poisson's equations with boundary values fixed by the imposed conditions. A general method for determining integral relations between perturbation velocity components is developed. This analysis is not restricted in application to optimum cases; it may be used for any supersonic wing problem" (p. 1213).

POWER CALIBRATION FOR BSR LOADING 33

Description: BSR Loading 33 consists of an essentially 5 by 6 fuel element array completely reflected by water. It was controlled by means of two boron carbide shim-safety rods and a type 347 stainless steel regulating rod with an 57-mil wall, located as shown in Fig. a. The critical mass was about 3.4 kg of U/sup 235/ , with an excess reactivity for the clean cold loading of about 0.6%. The total mass in the initial loading was 3.6 kg of U/sup 235/. Loading 33 was initially assembled in November 1954, from clean cold fuel elements. The power calibration was made during the first series of runs at power levels appreciably above 1 watt. Cobalt foils were used as the detector material for the thermal neutron flux determination in the lattice. The foils were exposed at 6-in. intervals in vertical traverses in the water passage between the last two plates on the outside of the fuel elements. Measurements were also mnde along the vertical axis of the element in lattice position 25, which was approximately at the center of the configuration. Cadmium ratios were determined at centerline and at 6in. intervals below centerline. Symmetrical flux distribution was assumed around the north-south centerline of the core and cadmium ratios were assumed to be symmetrical around the reactor horizontal centerline. DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A 1/2-INCH TITANIUM TO STAINLESS FLANGE

Description: The gas lift pump has not been considered here as a prinme mover for circulating coolant through a primary circuit, in view of the complexity which would arise in designing such a pump to overcome the head losses associated with the secondary large volumetric flow rates. The purpose of this investigation was merely to make a preliminary study of the general character of a heavy liquid metal gas-lift, to compare its operation with that of water, and to obtain some idea of the relationship of efficiency to flow rate. Endurance Evaluation of Sintered, Porous, Strut-Supported Turbine Blades made by Federal-Mogul-Bower-Bearings, Incorporated, under Bureau of Aeronautics Contract NOas 55-124-C

Description: Four strut-supported, transpiration-cooled turbine blades were investigated experimentally in a turbojet engine. The blade shells were fabricated by the mold-sintering method with spherical stainless-steel powder. Two blades were investigated in order to evolve suitable capping methods for the blade tip. Two other blades were used to evaluate the durability of the porous-shell material. The blades were investigated at a turbine-tip speed of 1305 feet per second, an average turbine-inlet temperature of about 1670 F, and at a porous-shell temperature limited to a maximum of approximately 1040 F.

SINTERED ALUMINA AS A PUMP BEARING AND JOURNAL MATERIAL

Description: Design criteria and operating experience with the aluminum oxide bearing and journal combination as installed in canned rotor pumps in in-pile loops are described. No pump failures occurred in 8 pumps with A1/sub 2/0/sub 3/ bearings over a cumulative period of l0,000 hours due to wear or corrosion. Chemical Processing Department monthly report, October 1957

Description: Record highs were set for Pu output in separations plants and for amount of U processed in Purex. UO{sub 3} production and shipments exceeded schedules. Fabrication of 200 and 250 Model assemblies is reported. Unfabricated Pu production was 8.5% short. Nitric acid recovery in Purex and Redox is reported. Prototype anion exchange system for Pu was tested in Purex. Hinged agitator arms with shear pin feature was installed in UO{sub 3} plant H calciner. Operation of continuous type Task I, II facility improved. DBBP is considered for Recuplex. Methods for Pu in product solutions agreed to within 0. 10%. Purex recycle dock shelter is complete. Other projects are reported.

THE EFFECT OF EPINEPHRINE ON SERUM LIPOPROTEINS

Description: Epinephrine injection has been shown to produce a two and three fold increase of the higher Sf classes of serum lipoproteins in the rabbit. The previously observed elevation of serum lipids was confirmed. The hyperlipoproteinemia following epinephrine injection appears about the same time as in certain conditions of stress. (auth)

Experimental lift of low-aspect-ratio triangular wings at large angles of attack and supersonic speeds

Description: Report presenting testing of three wings of different aspect ratios at a range of angles of attack to provide information on the effects of large angles of attack on the lift and normal force on triangular wings in a specific Mach number range. Flight data pertinent to buffeting and maximum normal-force coefficient of the Douglas X-3 research airplane

Description: Report presenting the X-3 airplane, which has a straight 4.5-percent-thick wing of modified hexagonal section, which has been flown to maximum wing normal-force coefficients in the Mach number range from 0.7 to 1.1 at an average altitude of 30,000 feet. Measurements were made of airplane and wing-panel maximum normal-force coefficients and of some buffeting characteristics.
