Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Description: Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive inc… more

AN ALPHA COUNTER FOR UNIFORMITY MEASUREMENTS

Description: An ionization-type alpha counter is used to mensure the uniformity of thin coatings of alpha -emitting materials to plus or minus l% exclusive of statistical error. The (n, alpha ) reaction allows the counter to be used for measuring the uniformity of B/sup 10/ foils when a suitable neutron source is provided. (auth)

Analog Computer Study of the Operation of the Gas-Cooled Loop on the Oak Ridge Research Reactor

Description: An annlog computer study of the ORR gas-cooled loop was made. The effects on fuel and gas temperatures of changing gas (nitrogen) flow rates, turning the heater on and off, and inserting or removing the fuel were determined. It was found that the temperature of the sample, if fuel, could be raised more rapidly than it could be reduced, and that the temperature could be reduced faster with high rates of flow. All of the equations used in building up the computer are given, and some of them are d… more

Analyses of Experimental Power-Reactivity Feedback Transfer Functions for a Natural Circulation Boiling Water Reactor

Description: ABS>Experimental power-reactivity feedback transfer functions were calculated from the EBWR power transfer function measurements. A simplified model of the EBWR kinetics was developed, using an analog computer, and an analytic expression was obtained for the feedback function. The analytic solution was fitted to the experimental functions to obtain power coefficients and time constants for various modes of operation. These data were extrapolated, and a power transfer function was predicted for … more

Analysis of V-g records from the Grumman F8F-2 airplane

Description: From Introduction: "In the present paper, which supplements reference 1, V-g records obtained from F8F-2 airplanes in 1949 are analyzed statistically to determine the frequency of experiencing large values of normal load factor and airspeed. These results are compared with the results from the F8F-1 airplane."

An Application of Spencer's Method to the Stieltjes and Hamburger Moment Problems

Description: Given the moments of a function it is often desirable to obtain a numerical approximation of the function. A method for estimating the solutions of the Stieltjes and Hamburger moment problems is developed. Calculations indicate that the method is both feasible and accurate. (auth)

ARGON AS A PROTECTIVE ATMOSPHERE FOR MOLTEN SALTS

Description: In reactors employing circulating molten salt fuels and having most of the Kr and Xe gases stripped from the fuel into the off-gas, argon may reasonably be used as the blanket (and stripping) gas. In such cases, the activity of Kr and Xe and their descendents so far exceeds that of Ar/sup 41/ and K/sup 41/ produced that no additional provision is needed for shielding. The amounts of Rb, Sr, Cs, and Ba are so much greater than that of K that no additional provision against chemical attack is nee… more
