Effects of inlet icing on performance of axial-flow turbojet engine in natural icing conditions

Description: A flight investigation in natural icing conditions was conducted to determine the effect of inlet ice formations on the performance of axial-flow turbojet engines. The results are presented for icing conditions ranging from a liquid-water content of 0.1 to 0.9 gram per cubic meter and water-droplet size from 10 to 27 microns at ambient-air temperature from 13 to 26 degrees F. The data show time histories of jet thrust, air flow, tail-pipe temperature, compressor efficiency, and icing parameters… more

Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

Description: The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of this equati… more

Measurement and Calculation of Blade Torsional Deflection of Three Supersonic-Type Propellers

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the blade torsional deflection of three supersonic-type propellers at various operating conditions. Blade-torsional deflection was found to produce appreciable results that can be predicted by theory with good accuracy. Results regarding the efficiency, thrust coefficient, and power coefficient are provided.

The Stratigraphy of the Upper Part of the Bone Valley Formation and its Relation to the Leached Zone

Description: From abstract: The two topmost zones of the Bone Valley formation at the Homeland mine are a phosphate-cemented quartz sandstone and an underlying pebbly and clayey quartz and phosphate sand characterized by graded bedding. This sequence is found in every other area of the land-pebble field. Therefore, these zones are considered to be stratigraphic units and the transition between them to be a key horizon.

THREE NEW DELAYED ALPHA EMITTERS OF LOW MASS

Description: Two new positron active isotopes, B{sup 8} and Na{sup 20}, have been found to decay to excited states of Be{sup 8} and Ne{sup 20}, which in turn decay 'instantaneously' by alpha emission. Their half-lives are 0.65 {+-} 0.1 sec. and 1/4 sec. respectively. N{sup 12} is also found to have a low energy positron group which leads to an {alpha}-unstable excited state in C{sup 12}. The masses of B{sup 8} and Na{sup 20} are 8.027 and 20.015 respectively. B{sup 8} decays by a 13.7 {+-} 0.3 Mev positron,… more

Interim report No. 1, RT 105-577-A: Irradiation of solid and cored hot pressed fuel elements

Description: In order to evaluate the performance of uranium slugs canned by the hot press method, several tubes of this metal were charged at C Pile and scheduled for irradiation until a specified number of ruptures had occurred. At the present time, all scheduled ruptures of hot-pressed slugs have been obtained. This report summarizes the irradiation experience under this test and the results obtained to the present time, and presents conclusions which are drawn from this experience.

A MODIFIED PILE OSCILLATOR FOR NEUTRON CROSS-SECTION MEASUREMENTS

Description: A pile oscillator was designed, constructed, and operated at the Battelle Research Reactor. This pile oscillator cycles a specimen and a standard in the same container through an annular ion chamber located in the thermal column. This almost simultaneous oscillation of the standard and specimen eliminates errors caused by power drifts or fluctuations. The use of a continuous graphite rod for the container or carrier reduces undesirable scattering effects of the carrier. The oscillator was calib… more
