Survey of Nonmetallic Liquid Coolants for Nuclear-Power Piles

Description: A comprehensive survey of the literature was made in an effort to identify nonmetallic materials of possible usefulness as liquid coolants. Materials having maximum melting points of 1000 deg F and boiling points of l200 deg F were considered, but boiling points above 2200 deg F were preferred. Melting points, boiling points, densities, heat capacities, and thermal conductivities were tabulated. Approximately 190 materials appeared to have melting and boiling temperatures in a suitable range. A paucity of thermal- conductivty and heat-capacity data prevented further estimates of suitability of all but nine of these materials. Of these nine nonmetallics, only sodium hydroxide appeared to offer possibilities when considered according to the NEPA formula. (M.C.G.)

Calculations on U235 Fission Product Decay Chains

Description: Report of equations for calculating decay of U235. The introduction states" Calculations have been made on the U235 fission product decay schemes. The results for a typical example, that of a reactor operating at 1000 kilowatts for 180 days, have been tabulated and graphed. General formulae have been used so that the results can be applied for any power level and any time of irradiation" (p. 2).

The attenuation characteristics of four specially designed mufflers tested on a practical engine setup

Description: Attenuation characteristics of four different resonator mufflers were determined in both cold tests and engine field tests and compared with the theoretical calculations. These mufflers were specifically designed for a helicopter. Engine-exhaust sound pressures, temperatures, and noise levels from the helicopter were measured. The experimental muffler cold tests indicated close a agreement with theory, whereas the engine tests indicated some discrepancies. Test results show the usefulness of the theoretical equation used for predicting muffler attenuation characteristics.

Effect of high bulk temperatures on boundary lubrication of steel surfaces by synthetic fluids

Description: "High operating temperatures of new and projected turbine engines require that synthetic fluids be used as lubricants, because these fluids have better thermal stability and viscosity-temperature characteristics than petroleum oils have. An experimental study was conducted to learn the effect of high lubricant bulk temperatures on the boundary lubricating effectiveness of various types of synthetic fluid" (p. 1).

A variational theorem for creep with applications to plates and columns

Description: From Summary: "A variational theorem is presented for a body undergoing creep. Solutions to problems of creep bending and creep collapse of plates, columns, beams, and shells can be obtained by means of the direct methods of the calculus of variations in conjunction with the stated theorem. The application of the theorem is illustrated for plates and columns by the solution of two sample problems."
