Radiometric Reconnaissance Examination in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey

Description: Abstract: In May 1950, 350 miles of road was traversed in the vicinity of a torbernite locality in New Jersey. The radioactivity of the area traversed was two to three times above normal, averaging 0.003 percent equivalent uranium. It is estimated that there is 1,000 tons of rock averaging 0.009 percent uranium at the torbernite locality. The presence of this area of above-normal radioactivity suggests that further study is needed in the Piedmont belt and the flanking sediments, which may conta… more

Radioactive Rare-Earth Deposit at Scrub Oaks Mine, Morris County, New Jersey

Description: From abstract: A deposit of rare-earth minerals in the Scrub Oaks iron mine, Morris County, N. J., was mapped and sampled in 1955. The rare-earth minerals are mainly in coarse-grained magnetite ore and in pegmatite adjacent to it. Discrete bodies of rare-earth-bearing magnetite ore apparently follow the plunge of the main magnetite ore body at the north end of the mine. Radioactivity of the ore containing rare earths is about 0.2 to 0.6 milliroentgens per hour.

Reconnaissance for Radioactive Materials in Northeastern United States During 1952

Description: The following report covers a reconnaissance for radioactive materials that was made in parts of Maine, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. It's primary objective was to examine the iron ore deposits and associated rocks in Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Highlands of New Jersey. Additionally, several deposits known or reported to contain radioactive minerals were examined to delimit their extent. However, most of the deposits examined are not significant as possible sources of rad… more

New Brunswick Laboratory Quarterly Report: April-June 1954

Description: Chemistry of Feed Materials. Studies were made of the first step in the reduction of UO/sub 3/ to UO/sub 2/. The rates of reduction of pelleted- hydrated and pelleted-dehydrated UO/sub 3/ to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in steam were determined. The rates of reduction of pelleted U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ to UO/sub 2/ in 1-to-1 ammonia-steam were determined. Some preliminary measurements were made on the thermal conductivities of hydrated and dehydrated UO/sub 3/ wafers. Purification of Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ for spe… more

Mine Pumping Plants: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania

Description: From Summary: "To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of mine water handled by pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation. The main conclusion that be drawn from an investigation of drainage practices in the anthracite region is that, although efficient pumping layouts, tunnels for draining… more
