Aqueous Homogeneous Type Research Reactors

Description: The solution-type research reactors placed in operation by Atomics International fall into three power range categories. The 50-kw type has the advantages of a large graphite refiector, both horizontal and vertical thermal columns, and gamma ray exposure facilities in its sub-pile area. The 1.5-kw reactor has a 5 1/2 -foot square vertical thermal column for exponential work. The 10 watt unit is intended as a training and minimum research facility. These reactors and their operating characterist… more

Basic Studies of the Separation of Uranium Hexafluoride from Mixtures Containing Chlorine Trifluoride and Hydrogen Fluoride

Description: Processes for the conversion of uranium compounds or uranium metal to uranium hexafluoride ordinarily involve the use of a powerful fluorinating agent. Elemental fluorine is used when the scale of operations justifies the construction of a fluorine generating plant, but for smaller operation the use of the interhalogens of fluorine has definite advantages. These compounds provide a high concentration of fluorinating power at moderate temperatures and pressures and are more easily stored and tra… more

CONSTRUCTION DESIGN OF EBR-II: AN INTEGRATED UNMODERATED NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Description: The Argoune Experimentul Breeder Reactor-II is a completely integrated nuclear power plant which employs an unmoderated reactor as a heat source, and generates 20,000 kw of electricity. The integrated nuclear plant includes the fuel re-processing and fabrication cycle and thereby makes a signigicant contribution to power reactor techaology by operating on recycled fuel. The preliminary design of this plant was described at the First International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy… more

Correlation of Exponential and PCTR Measurements of Cluster Fuel Elements with Theory

Description: Accurate knowledge of the lattice parameters comprised in the four factor formula k∞=η∈Pi are required for optimum designing of reactors. In the special case of cluster fuel elements conventional handbook formulas are of little use. It is the intent of this paper to report the results of some recent improvements in the calculation of these parameters. By the addition of certain refinements in the calculation of these parameters. By the addition of certain refinements to the conventional calcula… more

CRITICAL ASSEMBLIES OF GRAPHITE AND ENRICHED URANIUM WITH BERYLLIUM REFLECTORS

Description: Data are given on properties of three sets of cylindrical Be reflected, graphite-mcderated critical assemblies. The first set was primarily to establish characteristics as functions of C/Oy atomic ratio of core with nearly constant reflector thickness. Fission distributions were determined. The second set consisted of three assemblies with fixed core to determine the effect of redistributing reflector from the ends to the cylindrical wall. This series was done to provide the Los Alamos Scientif… more

Damage Effects to Graphite Irradiated Up to 1000 C

Description: Irradiation effects at 500 deg C in experiemtal graphites with varied density, crystallinity, surface area, and pore distribution are discussed. Changes in macroscopic properties are dependent upon the initial crystallite structure; however, the mechanism by which the increase of interlayer spacing and decrease of apparent crystallite size effect these changes is not well understood. Macroscopic properties are also dependent upon the arrangement of crystallites and whole coke particles within t… more
