Description: "Tests have been made in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at Mach numbers of 1.41, 1.61, and 2.01 of various arrangements of a 0.04956-scale model of the Convair F-102A airplane with faired inlets. Tests made of the model equipped with a plain wing, a wing with 6.4 percent conical camber, and a wing with 15 percent conical camber. Body modifications including an extended nose, a modified canopy, and extended afterbody fillets were evaluated" (p. 1).

Applicability of Gas Centrifuge to Isotope Separation for Elements Heavier Than Titanium

Description: The applicability of the gas centrifuge to the separation of the isotopes of the elements from Ti through U was examined. The suitable elsments were determined, and their effects on required centrifuge characteristics were surveyed. The performance of cascades of various aires with different gages was explored, and the cost of a pilot plant program to develop basic separation data was estimated. (F.S.)

Aqueous Corrosion of 2S Aluminum at Elevated Temperatures

Description: 2S aluminum corrodes uniformly in nearly pure water at rates which increase with temperature. Although normal corrosion is not extraordinarily rapid up to well over 250 degrees C, The usefulness of the material might be limited since above 200̊C intergranular attack occurs, with resultant more rapid penetration and deterioration of the metal.

Combustor performance with various hydrogen-oxygen injection methods in a 200-pound-thrust rocket engine

Description: Report presenting a determination of the characteristics velocity of liquid oxygen and gaseous hydrogen as a function of mixture ratio in a nominal 200-pound-thrust variable-length rocket engine. Fourteen injectors, which varied mixing and oxygen atomization, were investigated. The four types of injector designs included triplets of two hydrogen jets impinging on one oxygen jet, concentric injection with hydrogen surrounding a jet of oxygen, radial injection of oxygen with variations in hydroge… more

DETECTION AND TELEMETERING OF IONIZING RADIATION BY FREQUENCY VARIATION

Description: Three methods are discussed for detecting ionizing radiation and transitting the intelligence. All three methods make use of the reactamce variation of a frequency determining network, to vary the frequency of an R.F. transitter as a function of ionizing radiation entering an ion chamber or counter. The first method is based on the capacitance znd subsequent frequency variation of am electrometer incorporated in an ion chamber. The variation is achieved by a moving came electrometer, where the … more

Electrophoretic Processes--Nuclear Aspects. Final Report for December 1, 1956-June 30, 1959. Vitro Job 2091

Description: The feasibility of the electrophoretic (electrokinetic) coating process has been demonstrated for a number of nuclear applications. The major portion of the experimental program was directed toward work which leads to: development of electrophoretic coatings which should be useful for the protection of graphite and graphite fuel elements against physical and chemical attack under reactor conditions. Several of these coatings also show promise for fission product retention; a technique for apply… more

An Estimation of the Explosion Hazard During Reprocessing of Metallic Uranium Fuel Elements Metallurgically Bonded to Zircaloy Cladding

Description: Through the years, considerable effort has been expended in studies of the explosive reactions sometimes observed in the dissolution of uranium-zirconium alloys in nitric acid. It has been shown (1) that such reactions result from the rapid oxidation of finely dived solids released by the preferential dissolution of the metallic matrix. The explosive portion of such solids has been identifies (1) as an intermetallic compound with the approximate composition UZr2. This compound, referred to as t… more

AN ESTIMATION OF THE EXPLOSION HAZARD DURING REPROCESSING OF METALLIC URANIUM FUEL ELEMENTS METALLURGICALLY BONDED TO ZIRCALOY CLADDING

Description: BS>Experimental studies were performed to define the behavior in ammonium fluoride solutions of uraniumzirconium alloys and of explosive residues isolated from such alloys. The results indicate that once the diffusion layer existing between the uranium core and the Zircaloy cladrung is exposed to such solutions, it will readily and completely dissolve, thus eliminating the possibility of this portion of the diffusion layer entering into an explosive reaction with nitric acid. Because of the pro… more

Exploration of Radiometric Methods

Description: A number of ions have been determined by the radiometric analysis technique. The basic scheme of this analytical method is to add an excess of a radioactive reagent to a solution and to use the ratio of the excess activity as a determination of one of the reactants.

Flight Investigation of Factors Affecting the Choice of Minimum Approach Speed for Carrier-Type Landings of a Swept-Wing Jet Fighter Airplane

Description: Report presenting flight testing and analog-computer studies using flight-test results of a swept-wing jet fighter in the landing condition to determine the factors that influence a pilot to select the minimum approach speed for carrier-type landings. Many factors that influenced the pilot occurred in approximately the same speed range, and the quantitative determination of the influence of each factor was not possible.
