Measurements Through a Hot Cell Window Using Optical Tooling

Description: S>Optical tooling has been evaluated for the measurement of physical dimensions of radioactive parts through hot cell windows. Instruments were set up outside of a four foot thick lead glass window and by means of a grid plate which had been accurately scribed, a ''contour map'' or calibration chart of the window variations was recorded. Although the window was not specially selected, the readings were within 1.0% of the true dimension without using correction factors. One of the calibration ch… more

On Neutron Evaporation From Excited Nuclei

Description: At high excitation energies, competition of proton and c-particle emission with neutron emission becomes important. For low excitation, the competition between Y-emission, neutron emission, and fission should be taken into account. To aid in the evaluation of this competition an experiment has been performed to measure the number and energy spectrum of the protons and c-particles emitted in the high energy bombardment of uranium with protons, deuterons, and c-particles.

Interim report No. 1, RT 105-577-A: Irradiation of solid and cored hot pressed fuel elements

Description: In order to evaluate the performance of uranium slugs canned by the hot press method, several tubes of this metal were charged at C Pile and scheduled for irradiation until a specified number of ruptures had occurred. At the present time, all scheduled ruptures of hot-pressed slugs have been obtained. This report summarizes the irradiation experience under this test and the results obtained to the present time, and presents conclusions which are drawn from this experience.

A flight investigation of the effect of leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-wing airplane

Description: Report presenting flight measurements on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the effects of adding forward camber and an increased leading-edge radius on the low-speed stalling characteristics, the high-speed static longitudinal stability, and the airplane drag. The modified leading edge produced values of maximum lift somewhat greater than the slats on a normal airplane, but the stall was unacceptable because of an abrupt roll-off.

Localization of Cerium-144 in the Skeletal Tissues of Fetal Rats

Description: The developing fetal skeleton of the rat was used to study the microscopic localization of the rare earth Ce/sup 144/ in bone. Nineteen-day-old rat fetuses were injected with Ce/sup 144/ in isotonic sodium citrate via the umbilical vein. They were sacrificed one-haif hour after the injection by immersion in 80% alcohol fixative. The fetuses were embedded in paraffin and sectioned at 10 to 12 mu . Semiserial sections were treated with periodic acid- Schiff stain for mucopolysaccharides, and by t… more

Some Calculations for the Boiling Reactor Shield

Description: The shield for the boiling reactor experiment is intended to serve for a series of homogeneous reactors. With this in mind the layout shown has been designed to provide flexibility. In order to obtain information on required shield thicknesses some calculations have been made for the first two proposed reactors, the Teapot and a six foot boiling reactor. Calculations include the radiation from the reactor compartment into the instrument room and through the top shield during operation. In the c… more

Deep versus shallow cooling ponds

Description: Some months ago, the Engineering Department was requested to make an evaluation estimate of the cost of obtaining approximately 150,000 gpm of cooling water from shallow ponds or from cooling towers. Their conclusions (see DPWZ-5305) were (1) that both schemes were feasible and each produced cooling water of approximately the same annual average temperature; (2) the cooling towers could be built more quickly, largely because no additional engineering data were required before construction would… more

Thermal Neutron Fluxes in HRE-2 Determined From Zircaloy-2 Induced ActivityMeasurements, Runs 16 and 17

Description: Thermal neutron fluxes prevailing near some Zircaloy-2 specimens exposed during HRT run 17, and near others exposed during runs 17, 16, 14 and 13 have been determined from measurements of the induced activity in the specimens. The neutron fluxes were calculated for an average core power level of 2 Mv.

Measured Data Pertaining to Buffeting at Supersonic Speeds of the Douglas D-558-II Research Airplane

Description: Report presenting data obtained from an investigation of the Douglas-D558-II airplane to determine its buffeting characteristics at high lift and supersonic speeds. From Summary: "Buffeting was encountered at normal-force coefficients greater than about 0.7 in the Mach number range from 0.96 to 1.27 but at Mach number of 1.57, a peak normal-force coefficient of 0.80 was attained with no indication of buffeting. The increase in buffet intensity with lift is very gradual at supersonic speed compa… more

Phase Stability of Homogeneous Reactor Hot Fuel Solutions

Description: S>Portions of two samples of HRT fael solutions were sealed in silica capillary tubes approximately three weeks after they were removed from the reactor and the temperature at which each solution separated into two liquid layers was determined. The values found, 325 er inch per 1 C for one sample and 326 er inch per 1/2 C for the other, are slightly lower than predicted from experiments with synthetic fuel solutions (329--330 C) but the discrepancies are small enough so that they could be accou… more

Direct Maintenance Practices for the Homogeneous Reactor Test

Description: The Homogeneous Reactor Test is designed for maintenance to be performed while the parts of the reactor are partinlly or completely submerged in water to reduce radiation levels. Tools with long handles permit the operator, standing above the equipment, to disconnect flanged joints, air lines, electrical and instrument leads, etc., in a minimum time. The techniques and tools employed to accomplish these various operations and to minimize intermixing of the contaminated process fluids with the s… more

Evaluation of Centrifugal Compressor Performance With Water Injection

Description: The effects of water injection on a compressor are presented. To determine the effects of varying water-air ratio, the compressor was operated at a constant equivalent impeller speed over a range of water-air ratios and weight flows. Operation over a range of weight flows at one water-air ratio and two inlet air temperatures was carried out to obtain an indication of the effects of varying inlet air temperature. Beyond a water-air ratio of 0.03 there was no increase in maximum air-weight flow, … more
