The 1A Hybrid Flowsheet

Description: A preliminary hybrid 1A flowsheet in which the extraction section operates substantially acid while the scrub section is acid deficient is presented. The effects of added nitric acid on the performance of the acid deficient 1A flowsheet are considered, and the need for control of the entering stream acidities in such flowsheets is evaluated. Data on batch-countercurrent decontamination and plutonium recovery are included. (J.R.D.)

Proton-Proton Scattering at 340 MeV

Description: Measurements of the proton-proton differential scattering cross section using 340 Mev protons show a cross section approximately constant between 41{sup o} and 90{sup o} in the center of mass system. Two methods of counting the scattered protons have been used. The first method uses a counter telescope to count the scattered protons. The second method utilizes coincidences between counters which record the two protons involved in a single scattering process. The first method gives slightly high… more

Quarterly Report for General Research October - November - December, 1949 (Deleted Version)

Description: The extraction of radium from uranium residues was proposed either by the use of the old (Curie) process or by the development and use of a new process. Qualitative procedures for the extraction of radium from pitch-blende are found recorded in the literature but little quantitative data are available. In order to become acquainted with the process and techniques involved, an attempt was made to use the method developed by the Curies, which essentially is being used by the Eldorado Gold Mines, … more

A Review of the Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium

Description: BS>The preparation of niobium was attempted by a number of chemical and electrochemical routes. Chemical reduction of oxides and halides such as Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, K/sub 2/NbOF/sub 5/, K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/, and NbCl/sub 5/ was conducted with varying degrees of success. Aqueous electrochemical reduction has not yet yielded a metallic deposit. The electrolysis of molten baths containing K/sub 2/NbOF/sub 5/ or K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/ produced niobium metal. The more promising methods of preparation for N… more

A Review of the Rare-Earth Hydrides

Description: Some of the properties of rare earth hydrides are reviewed. Information on the hydrides of Tm, Lu, Tb, and Ho is not included because no work has been done on these elements. Eu and Yb are different from other rare earths in that MH/sub 2/ is their highest hydride and the crystal structures of EuH/sub 2/ and YbH/sub 2/ are orthorhombic. ra, Ce, Pr, and Nd form a dihydride which will take hydrogen into solid solution up to MH/sub 3/ without a change in crystal structure. The heavy rare earths fo… more

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IX. Photosynthesis,Photoreduction and the Hydrogen-Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide Dark Reaction

Description: A comparison of the rates of fixation of Carbon 14 dioxide in algae for the processes of photosynthesis, photoreduction and the hydrogen-oxygen-carbon dioxide dark reaction has been made. For the same series of experiments, rates of incorporation of tracer carbon into the separate soluble components using the radiogram method have been determined. The mechanism of carbon dioxide uptake has been shown to occur via two distinct paths. In all cases studied, essentially the same compounds appear ra… more

Proposal of solid titanium shim and control rods

Description: This report is a suggestion offered for a design modification regarding the material and layout of control and shim rods for the proposed G pile under design. The author suggests considering solid 2 inch diameter titanium control rods, in place of gadolinium-steel hollow 3 inch diameter rods which have been considered to this point. From a material cost and weight standpoint, and with regard to the neutron absorption properties, this suggestion appears better or equal to the original design pro… more

Study of the effects of a disaster at Grand Coulee Dam upon the Hanford Works

Description: Declassified 23 Nov 1973. It is assumed that the Grand Coulee Dam would be destroyed by one direct hit following detonation of an atomic bomb. Major effects of the explosion include flooding and isolation of Richland, flooding of Midway Substation, and flooding of surrounding areas. Maximum water elevations following a direct hit and indirect hits are estimated. Data are presented for flow through openings and flow through dam failure. (HLW)

Analysis of spanwise temperature distribution in three types of air-cooled turbine blade

Description: From Summary: An approximate method for determining the allowable stress-limited blade-temperature distribution is included, with brief accounts of a method for determining the maximum allowable effective gas temperatures and the cooling-air requirements. Numerical examples that illustrate the use of the various temperature-distribution equations and of the nondimensional charts are also included.

The Coulometric Determination of Acid

Description: Introduction: "The need for a method of acid determination which could be used for small samples and easily adapted to remote control led to the investigation of the use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acid in certain solutions. The use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acetic acid in the presence of nitric acid has been reported (1)."

The Development of Plutonium Electrodeposition Methods : Interim Report

Description: From introduction: "The following report presents a body of information obtained in the Health Instrument Development Laboratory from September, 1948, to the present, and is intended to be a preliminary review of [the study of electrodeposition of plutonium]. Many improvements in technique and methods and investigations along lines not explored are suggested by the present work. These will be undertaken as time permits, and reported at a later time."

RECOVERY OF URANIUM FROM CLIMAX BRANNERITE CONCENTRATE, C-7

Description: From ninety-five to ninety-nine per cent of the uranium was extracted from brannerite concentrates by digesting the sample with concentrated sulfuric acid and then leaching with water, using one ton of acid per ton of concentrate. Precipitates containing from sixteen to forty-eight per cent U{sub 3)O{sub 8} were obtained from pregnant solutions. Further research on the precipitation of uranium and the recovery of wolfram is needed to determine the proper treatment. (auth)
