Maneuvering Horizontal Tail Loads

Description: Report describing a study to develop an acceptable method for calculating the magnitude, direction, and distribution of the maneuvering horizontal tail load. The simplified method identified is outlined and evidence is provided to demonstrate the method's accuracy. Cloud-Chamber Effect in Large Explosions

Description: Report discussing the atmospheric conditions under which a cloud of water droplets will form when an atomic bomb or a large amount of TNT is detonated. A theoretical discussion of the conditions is presented followed by a discussion of two experimental verifications of the theory, including the July 16, 1945 nuclear test at the Trinity site in New Mexico. Delayed Neutrons from [Uranium-235] After Short Irradiation

Description: Report discussing the decay curve of delayed neurons from U²³⁵ after very short neutron irradiation of about 10-milliseconds in duration following a drop experiment that resulted in the production of a neutron burst. The experiment arrangements and results are presented in graphical and narrative form. Tables and graphs plot measurement of decay from 0.2 seconds to 10 minutes following the drop.

Relative and Absolute Yield from Antimony and Lanthanum Photoneutron Sources

Description: Preliminary data are tabulated on photoneutron yields of beryllium when irradiated by gamma rays from Sb124 and La 140. The results show that for equivalent total gamma strength the antimony produces 47 times as many photoneutrons as the lanthanum, while for equivalent millicurie strength the antimony produces 200 times as many photoneutrons as the lanthanum.

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Description: Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.

The Stopping Power of Metals

Description: Summary. The effect of the conduction electrons on the stopping power of metals has been considered from two essentially different points of view. No numerical calculations have been carried out, because we have found no completely satisfactory was of computing Z'e, the effective charge on the moving ion. The Hall Effect in Neutron Irradiated and Annealed Graphite

Description: Abstract. Irradiated Whiting graphite possesses a small negative or a positive Hall constant, depending upon the dosage. Annealing at 500 degrees C for 1 hour in helium results in a Hall constant which is large in magnitude and negative in sign. Theory of Oscillating Absorber in a Chain Reacting Pile

Description: Abstract. the fluctuation in pile intensity caused by an oscillating point absorber is calculation. It is found that the nature of the response depends on the frequency of the impressed oscillation. If the frequency is high compared to the decay rate of the high harmonics, the response consists of a wave which is propagated away from the oscillator. The Effect of Thermal Cycling on the Thermal Transfer from a Sand Blasted Slug to an Unbonded Jacket

Description: Abstract. Measurements were made to determine the effect of thermal cycling on heat transfer from slug to jack using a slug with a sand blasted surface. The value of the transfer coefficient h decreased from initial values ranging from 10 to [formula], to values and [formula] after 1700 cycles, and to a range of 0.15 to 0.45 [formula] after 3200 cycles. Comparisons are made with the results found for slugs with different surfaces.

The Digging-in of a Warped Rod Into a Rib

Description: Abstract. Some rather idealized considerations are given regarding the depth a warped rod presses into the ribs at the places of contact. It appears that this distance may, under some conditions, be of the order of 70 times greater than for a straight rod resting uniformly on the ribs.

Estimates of the Maximum Surface Temperature for a Slug Displaced from the Center of the Tube

Description: When a slug has been displaced from its normal position the thickness of the water film is decreased over part of the surface, and higher temperatures may be expected where the film is thin. A Study of Thorium Peroxide Sulfate

Description: Abstract. Thorium peroxide was precipitated from thorium nitrate solutions containing varying amounts of sulfate ion and of hydrogen ion. The washed solids were analyzed both wet and dry. Analyses were made for thorium, peroxide oxygen, sulfate, nitrate, and water contents. X-ray powder photographs of the dried samples by W.H. Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide

Description: Technical report on the studies that have been made on the composition and thermal decomposition of uranyl peroxide. The conditions of precipitation and drying have been found to have no appreciable effect on the composition of the compound, but do affect the physical appearance of the precipitate and the rate of thermal decomposition. The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron

Description: Technical report describing that the use of controlled amounts of carbonate, acting both as complexing agent buffer led to a fairly satisfactory procedure for the determination of Th in Th-U alloys, using cupferron. Recovery of D2O and UO2F2 by Distillation

Description: Technical report describing the purification and separation by distillation of UO2F2 from D2O. In the experiment which is discussed 2,129.6 lbs of UO2F2 were dissolved in 6,605 lbs of D2O. The average isotopic purity of the D2O decreased during the distillation from 99.77% to 99.73%. The dissolved impurities were less than those present originally in the heavy water.
