Influence of Struts and Stays on the Speed of an Airplane

Description: Report presenting an experiment in the Rechlin airdrome in the fall of 1918 to determine the influence of struts and stays on the speed of an airplane. Results indicated that only a slight increase in horizontal speed was shown in a stayless airplane, but it had considerably greater climbing speed.

Some Remarks Concerning Soaring Flight

Description: The publication of the following details is due to the desire of the editor to have the problems of soaring flight treated on the occasion of the Rhone Soaring Flight Contest. Soaring flight is defined as motorless flight without loss of height. Some calculations are provided in order to maximize the potential effects of wind and air currents.

Crippling Strength of Axially Loaded Rods

Description: A new empirical formula was developed that holds good for any length and any material of a rod, and agrees well with the results of extensive strength tests. To facilitate calculations, three tables are included, giving the crippling load for solid and hollow sectioned wooden rods of different thickness and length, as well as for steel tubes manufactured according to the standards of Army Air Services Inspection. Further, a graphical method of calculation of the breaking load is derived in which a single curve is employed for determination of the allowable fiber stress.

N.A.C.A. Recording Air Speed Meter

Description: A new type of air speed meter is described which was designed by the technical staff of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The instrument consists essentially of a tight metal diaphragm of high natural period which is acted upon by the pressure difference of a pitot-static head. The resulting deflection of this diaphragm is recorded optically on a moving film.

Graphic Method for Calculating the Speed and Climbing Ability of Airplanes

Description: Note presenting a graphic method for calculating the speed and climbing ability of airplanes. This method starts from the actual power developed by the engine and makes it possible to determine all factors which together constitute what are known as flight performances for any combination of engine and airplane from the single graphic diagram given.

The Logarithmic Polar Curve - Its Theory and Application to the Predetermination of Airplane Performance

Description: "The logarithmic polar curve has for several years been used by the most prominent aerodynamical laboratories as well as by airplane manufacturers in Europe. To show more clearly the practical application of the polar curve, a series of examples are given with suggestions for solution. After a discussion of the theory and the practical application of the polar curve, the following problems are discussed: climbing flight, speed at various altitudes, and the characteristics of two seater observation airplanes of recent design" (p. 1).

The Flettner Rotor Ship in the Light of the Kutta-Joukowski Theory and of Experimental Results

Description: "In this paper the fundamental principles of the Flettner rotor ship (Reference I) are discussed in the light of the Kutta-Joukowski theory and available experimental information on the subject. A brief exposition of the Kutta-Joukowski theory is given and the speed of the rotor ship Buckau computed, first by using effective propulsive force obtained by the above theory, and then by direct application of wind tunnel data" (p. 1).

Pressure distribution on wing ribs of the VE-7 and TS airplanes in flight

Description: This paper is the first of a series of notes, each of which presents the complete results of pressure distribution tests made by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, on single-wing ribs of the VE-7 and TS airplanes for a particular condition of flight. The level flight results are presented here in the form of curves and show the comparison between the pressure distribution over a representative thin wing, R.A.F.-15, and a moderately thick wing, U.S.A.-27, throughout the range of angle of attack.
