Absolute Coefficients and the Graphical Representation of Aerofoil Characteristics

Description: It is argued that there should be an agreement as to what conventions to use in determining absolute coefficients used in aeronautics and in how to plot those coefficients. Of particular importance are the absolute coefficients of lift and drag. The author argues for the use of the German method over the kind in common use in the United States and England, and for the Continental over the usual American and British method of graphically representing the characteristics of an airfoil.

Air Forces Exerted on Streamlined Bodies with Round or Square Cross- Sections, When Placed Obliquely to the Airstream

Description: "The question of behavior of a streamlined body with round or square cross-sections is of importance in determining the shape to give an airplane fuselage. It is our task here to show how the lift and drag are affected, with the object placed obliquely to the air stream" (p. 1).

Air forces on airfoils moving faster than sound

Description: We are undertaking the task of computing the air forces on a slightly cambered airfoil in the absence of friction and with an infinite aspect ratio. We also assume in advance that the leading edge is very sharp and that its tangent lies in the direction of motion.

Airplane Balance

Description: The authors argue that the center of gravity has a preponderating influence on the longitudinal stability of an airplane in flight, but that manufacturers, although aware of this influence, are still content to apply empirical rules to the balancing of their airplanes instead of conducting wind tunnel tests. The author examines the following points: 1) longitudinal stability, in flight, of a glider with coinciding centers; 2) the influence exercised on the stability of flight by the position of… more

Calculation of Combining Effects in the Structure of Airplane Wings: A Rational Basis for Estimating the Reduction in the Design Load on Wing Beams Due to the Influence of Ribs and Covering Toward Causing the Beams to Deflect Together

Description: This lecture concerns the combining effects in airplane wings so as to save some of the dead weight. Equations are provided in order to calculate some of the load characteristics and some of the effects to be considered.

Choice of Profile for the Wings of an Airplane Part 1

Description: "The choice of the profile for the wings of an airplane is a problem which should be solved by a scientific method based on data obtained by systematic experimentation. The problem, in its present form, may be stated as follows: "To find a profile which has certain required aerodynamic characteristics and which encloses the spars, whose number, dimensions and separating distance are likewise determined by structural considerations." At present, the static test, corresponding to the case of acce… more

Choice of Profile for the Wings of an Airplane Part 2

Description: This report gives a general method for drawing airplane profiles. This method is useful, but it leads to a somewhat laborious drawing which becomes quite complicated when we take a transformation function having terms of a high degree.

Climbing Efficiency of Aircraft

Description: The object of this report was to indicate that we frequently only make use of 50 percent of the maximum brake horsepower of the engine in taking off the ground, that this loss is not inevitable, and that the effort to get engines of low weight per horsepower by boosting revolutions is of very little use to bombers and commercial airplanes.

Comparing Maximum Pressures in Internal Combustion Engines

Description: Thin metal diaphragms form a satisfactory means for comparing maximum pressures in internal combustion engines. The diaphragm is clamped between two metal washers in a spark plug shell and its thickness is chosen such that, when subjected to explosion pressure, the exposed portion will be sheared from the rim in a short time.

Correcting Engine Tests for Humidity

Description: Note presenting tests using a multicylinder engine to determine the effect that atmospheric humidity has on some phases of engine performance. Three test series with different types of fuel were carried out. The results indicate that failure to allow for the effect of differences in atmospheric humidity may introduce errors as great as would be occasioned by failure to allow for changes in barometric pressure.
