Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

Description: The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Description: Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

Description: The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the loca… more

Construction and Use of Charts in Design Studies of Gas Turbines

Description: "A method is presented for the computation and graphic representation of a series of possible turbine designs for any specific application. The use of a preliminary design chart is suggested for determining the number of stages and the effects of exit whirl and annular-area divergence on possible configurations. A specific design chart can then be made to aid in the study of the relations between turbine radius ratio, diameter, and significant design parameters such as Mach numbers, turning ang… more

Possible Test Sites in Granitic Rocks in the United States

Description: Introduction: This report describes areas of granitic rocks suitable for underground nuclear tests within Federally-controlled land in the continental limits of the United States. This information was requested of the U. S. Geological Survey by the Albuquerque Operations Office of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, and was compiled during March 1959 by D. C. Alvord, W. J. Carr, P. M. Hanshaw, S. P. Kanizay, C. S. Robinson, R. W. Schnabel, J. A. Sharps, and C. T. Wrucke.

A Method of Selecting the Thickness, Hollowness, and Size of a Supersonic Wing for Least Drag and Sufficient Bending Strength at Specified Flight Conditions

Description: Note presenting a consideration of a wing-selection problem sometimes encountered in the preliminary design of supersonic airplanes and missiles. The problem is to determine the span, section thickness ratio, and skin thickness or hollowness ratio of the wing of least drag when the plan form, section shape, wing lift requirement, and flight conditions are assumed known. An example of the application of the method to a diamond wing at Mach number 2.0 for a range of specified flight conditions is… more

Gamma Ray Spectrometry

Description: In the measurement of radioactive nuclides which emit gamma rays, the use of gamma ray spectrometer is comparable to the use of the ordinary spectrograph in analytic chemistry. The gamma radiation emitted by radioactive nuclides is electromagnetic radiation identical in fundamental nature with the visible, infrared and ultraviolet light found in ordinary spectroscopy.

Local Instability of the Elements of a Truss-Core Sandwich Plate

Description: The charts presented give the compressive buckling coefficients for a single-truss-core and a double-truss-core sandwich plate. These charts cover a wide range of sandwich proportions and may be used for sandwiches with unequal faces. They apply to inplane compressive loads acting parallel or perpendicular to the core direction or for various combinations of these loads. (author).

Charts Giving Critical Compressive Stress of Continuous Flat Sheet Divided Into Parallelogram-Shaped Panels

Description: "Charts giving the compressive-buckling stress coefficients for sheet panels of a shape occurring in swept-wing plan forms are presented. The panels are assumed to be a part of a continuous flat sheet divided by nondeflecting supports into parallelogram-shaped areas. The stability analysis was performed by the energy method and the results show that, over a wide range of panel aspect ratio, such panels are decidedly more stable than equivalent rectangular panels of the same area" (p. 1).

Zone Refining and Chemical Analysis of KCI and KBr Progress Report

Description: Upon initiation of our alkali halide purification program, we desired an accurate and complete chemical analysis of representative samples of the best salt commercially available. It was concluded that the most sensitive and probably most nearly complete technique is that provided by neutron activation.

Investigation of a Flow Deflector and an Auxiliary Scoop for Improving Off-Design Performance of Nose Inlets

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of flow deflectors which extend forward of an open-nose inlet for improving positive angle-of-attack performance and auxiliary scoops for use at off-design engine air-flow conditions at low angles of attack to determine their effect on net inlet performance. The results show that a deflector inlet and a basic open-nose inlet have about the same net performance at low angles of attack although the flow steadiness characteristics of the deflector inlet are t… more

Trip Rerport Organic Reactor Collant Survey

Description: A preliminary report has shown the potential importance of organic reactor coolants to Hanford technology. The salient points are complete avoidance of corrosion problems and accomplishment of DPR performance with low pressure technique. The recommendation of the report that loop tests be made at Hanford is to be acted upon by Recirculation Technology Unit as soon as organic coolant material is received. To insure starting this experimental work fully abreast of the information available, a tri… more

K [infinity] in Uranium - Water Lattices

Description: This report follows experiments on K[infinity], measuring the element for several red sizes, enrichments, and water-to-uranium volume ratios-(1, 2), by making use of the relation k[infinity] = 0M-[2]B-[2] (M-2 = migration area, B = buckling). The purpose of this report is to compare the experimental data for k[infinity] with values calculated from the four-factor formula k[infinity] = [eta][epsilon]pf.
