Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

Description: The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Description: Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

Standard nomenclature for airspeeds with tables and charts for use in calculation of airspeed

Description: Symbols and definition of various airspeed terms that have been adopted as standard by the NACA subcommittee on aircraft structural design are presented. The equations, charts, and tables required in the evaluation of true airspeed, calibrated airspeed, equivalent airspeed, impact and dynamic pressures, and Mach and Reynolds numbers have been compiled. Tables of the standard atmosphere to an altitude of 65,000 feet and a tentative extension to an altitude of 100,000 feet are given along with th… more

HRT-CP: Results of Solids Dissolution Tests

Description: A dissolution cycle in the chemical plant consists of refluxing with 10.8 M H2SO4 for 4 hours followed by refluxing for a like period with 4 M acid. In each of 3 tests in which 370 gram batches of simulated corrosion product solids were subjected to two dissolution cycles using 820 excess acid more than 99.6 of the solid material was dissolved (based on the amount of undissolved material collected). In another test using one dissolution cycle and 820 excess acid 99.5 of the solids material was … more

Flight Tests to Determine the Effect of Taper on the Zero-Lift Drag of Wings at Low Supersonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting the results of tests to determine the effect of taper on the zero-lift drag of wings of constant exposed aspect ratio at low supersonic speeds. Findings indicated that maximum thickness, leading-edge, and trailing-edge sweep are all important in determining the drag coefficient of a tapered wing.

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

Description: The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the loca… more
