Spectrophotometric studies of solutions at elevated temperatures and pressures: status and program for FY1961 and part of FY 1962

Description: A program was initiated on the spectrophotometric study of aqueous solution chemistry. The goal is operation at temperatures up to at least 330 deg C and at pressures up to 200 atm, and to near the critical point if this appears to be feasible. A spectrometer capable of operation under these extreme conditions is being designed. (W.L.H.)

FISSION OF GOLD BY CARBON IONS

Description: Angular distribution and kinetic-energy spectra of fragments, and cross sections for fission of gold with 68- to 124-Mev C{sup 12} ions have been obtained by observation of the fragments in two types of detectors, gas scintillation chambers and silicon p-n junctions. π<sup>+</sup>-p ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 310 Mev: PHASE-SHIFT ANALYSIS

Description: A comprehensive phase-shift analysis of {pi}{sup +}-p elastic-scattering data at 310-Mev incident-pion laboratory kinetic energy has been performed. The experimental data utilized include measurements of the differential and total cross sections and of the recoil-proton polarization. A Possible Phase Transition in Liquid He3

Description: A possible phase transition in liquid He{sup 3} has been investigated theoretically by generalizing the Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer equations for the transition temperature in the manner suggested by Cooper, Mills, and Sessler. ELECTRON-SPIN-RESONANCE STUDIES ON PHOTO-SYNTHETIC MATERIALS

Description: A number of organisms have been examined for their ability to produce electron-spin-resonance signals at low temperatures in response to illumination. The efficiency of the response is of the order of not less than 5%, and the wavelength for maximum response is generally slightly on the longer side of the wavelength of maximum absorption, with a minimum appearing at the wavelength of maximum absorption.

Hole-Hole Interactions and the Properties of Nuclear Matter

Description: Recently a number of authors have suggested modifications of the Brueckner theory of nuclear matter so as to include hole-hole interactions, as well as particle-particle interactions. CHARGE-EXCHANGE SCATTERING OF NEGATIVE PIONS BY HYDROGEN AT 230,260, 290, 317 AND 371 MeV

Description: The differential cross section for charge-exchange scattering of negative pions by hydrogen has been observed at 230, 260, 290, 317, and 371 Mev. The reaction was observed by detecting one gamma ray from the {pi}{sup 0} decay with a scintillation-counter telescope.
