Workshops and Problems for Benchmarking Eddy Current Codes

Description: A series of six workshops was held to compare eddy current codes, using six benchmark problems. The problems include transient and steady-state ac magnetic fields, close and far boundary conditions, magnetic and non-magnetic materials. All the problems are based either on experiments or on geometries that can be solved analytically. The workshops and solutions to the problems are described. Determination of the rate and efficiency of nitrogen transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton using nitrogen-15 as a tracer. Final report

Description: The rate of assimilated nitrogen transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton was measured under field conditions for natural mixed zooplankton populations using a nitrogen-15 tracer technique. The variability in rates, which ranged from 0.261 to 1.792 gram-atoms of phytoplankton nitrogen/gram-atoms of zooplankton nitrogen/24 hours, are thought to reflect a variability in the age frequency distribution of the zooplankton population. Elastic p-/sup 4/He scattering near 1 GeV

Description: New 1.029 GeV p-/sup 4/He data from an Argonne-UCLA-Minnesota collaboration are in excellent agreement with existing multiple diffraction theory predictions. The theoretical calculation includes spin and isospin dependence of the ..delta.. intermediate state process that fills the first diffraction minimum. The recently normalized Saclay data and the older Brookhaven data disagree with our calculation and the new data.

Heavy ion inertial fusion: interface between target gain, accelerator phase space and reactor beam transport revisited

Description: Recently revised estimates of target gain have added additional optimistic inputs to the interface between targets, accelerators and fusion chamber beam transport. But it remains valid that neutralization of the beams in the fusion chamber is useful if ion charge state Z > 1 or if > 1 kA per beamlet is to be propagated. Some engineering and economic considerations favor higher currents.

Experimental searches for magnetic monopoles. [Mass, probability, review]

Description: Analysis of the sensitivity of previous negative searches for magnetic monopoles shows that they constitute prior evidence against the monopole interpretation of the event reported as ''evidence for detection of a moving magnetic monopole''. The strength of the evidence varies with the unknown mass of the monopole. For M less than or equal to 10/sup 5/ GeV, odds are greater than 10/sup 6/ : 1 against. Time-resolved fast-neutron pinhole camera for studying thermonuclear plasmas

Some alternatives to the mixed oxide fuel cycle

Collisional effects on trapped electron instabilities

Description: The effects of collisions on dissipative trapped electron instabilities are evaluated by distinguishing between the perpendicular and parallel electron velocity components when calculating trapped and untrapped electron contributions. The growth rate is obtained for all regimes of collisionality and reduces to previous results in appropriate limits. Search for the top quark in electron-muon events with CDF

Description: The CDF detector has collected data for an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} during the 1988--89 Tevatron Collider run. This sample has been used to search for the top quark. We report here the results of the analysis of the electron-muon topology. We find that a top mass in the 28 to 72 GeV is excluded at the 95% confidence level. The same limits apply to a possible fourth generation, charge {minus}1/3, b{prime} quark decaying via the charged current. 21 refs., 14 figs.

Description: Initial results of studies of the feasibility of radiation-induced cataphoretic segregation of isotopes are summarized. More detailed feasibility calculations show that significant isotope separation efficiencies can be obtained for discharges at low pressure. Transport in compact tori

Description: The parameter B/sub e//nr/sub p/ (here, B/sub e/ is applied magnetic field strength, nr/sub p/ is the plasma density-radius product) is proposed as a key parameter for spheromak heating studies. If B/sub e//nr/sub p/ is too large, increased magnetic fluctuations limit heating; low B/sub e//nr/sub p/ value results in excessive radiation losses.
