200 Area TEDF interface control document

Description: Because the TEDF does not have any treatment or retention capacity, strict control at the generator interface is essential to operate the TEDF in compliance with good engineering practices, Hanford site requirements, and the 216 Discharge Permit. The information in the Interface Control Document (ICD) forms the basis of understanding between all parties involved in the TEDF; DOE, WHC, and the generating facilities. The ICD defines the controlling document hierarchy; LEF, and generator responsib… more

Accelerated line-by-line calculations for the radiative transfer of trace gases related to climate studies. Progress report No. 1, 15 September 1993--14 September 1994

Description: In the present study we are studying the effects of including carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, and the halocarbons in addition to water vapor in the radiating atmosphere. The study has focused on two principal issues: the effect on the spectral fluxes and cooling rates of carbon dioxide, ozone and the halocarbons at 1990 concentration levels and the change in fluxes and cooling rates as a consequence of the anticipated ten year change in the profiles of these species. For the latter study the wa… more

Activation of electrical machinery. Supplement 1. [Preliminary evaluation; not applicable to ground tests]

Description: The following analysis of the induced radioactivity in SNAP-50/SPUR electrical machinery having a high cobalt content is submitted. Induced radioactivity in the flight vehicle will contribute negligibly to allowable radiation levels. This is especially so due to the low neutron to gamma ratio of assumed radiation damage tolerances to semiconductors. A calculation to estimate the order of magnitude of induced radioactivity in cobalt is attached. The calculation is based on a best guess of the ne… more

Advanced subsystems development. Second semi-annual progress report, April 1--October 1, 1978

Description: The concept design for a small (less than 10 MWe) solar thermal electric generating plant was completed using projected 1985 technology. The systems requirements were defined and specified. The components, including an engineering prototype for one 15 kWe module of the generating plant, were conceptually designed. Significant features of the small solar thermal power plant were identified as the following: (1) 15-kWe Stirling-cycle engine/alternator with constant power output; (2) 10-meter poin… more

Advancing Technology and Methodology to Streamline Environmental Compliance

Description: By early 2000, fifteen oil and gas State Agencies were using RBDMS or a RBDMS utility to handle a significant amount or all of their data management needs. There are three additional State slated to begin implementation this year. There are an additional twelve State agencies that are not utilizing this technology that have proven to be very useful for so many other States. This project will allow for the base RBDMS install in all State oil and gas agency that desire it.

Description: The objective of this project was to conduct high-performance computing research and teaching at AAMU, and to train African-American and other minority students and scientists in the computational science field for eventual employment with DOE. During the project period, eight tasks were accomplished. Student Research Assistant, Work Study, Summer Interns, Scholarship were proved to be one of the best ways for us to attract top-quality minority students. Under the support of DOE, through resear… more

Analysis of requirements for accelerating the development of geothermal energy resources in California

Description: Various resource data are presented showing that geothermal energy has the potential of satisfying a significant part of California's increasing energy needs. General factors slowing the development of geothermal energy in California are discussed and required actions to accelerate its progress are presented. Finally, scenarios for developing the most promising prospect in the state directed at timely on-line power are given. Specific actions required to realize each of these individual scenari… more

AN ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE PERCENTAGE OF HELIUM BYPASSING THE CORE DUE TO THE REFLECTOR SEALING SYSTEM DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE HTGR

Description: The percentage of helium which will bypass the core if the reflector system shown is used is predicted. It is estimated that nominally about 0.1 to 0.2% of the total flow will bypass the core, which is not considered excessive. The most difficult parameter to determine was Z, the gap between the sealing surfaces. The method used to predict Z is presented. The effect of bowing due to a temperature gradient across the seals is discussed. (auth)

Annual technical progress report inducer pump program government fiscal year 1976 and 1976T. [LMFBR]

Description: The Inducer Pump Program was initiated to demonstrate the applicability and advantages of an inducer pump to the LMFBR. The inducer is a pump blading which is specifically tailored to provide excellent suction performance. Operating suction specific speeds two to three times those for the inlet of a centrifugal impeller can be achieved with a properly and conservatively designed inducer. When coupled to a centrifugal impeller, the inducer offers excellent suction performance which can be effect… more

Antiprotons and the Crystal Ball

Description: During the 1998 running of the Crystal Ball experiment, a couple of brief test runs were done with the C6 beamline tuned to produce antiprotons. Specifically, one shift on July 29th produced runs 329-334 with the beam momentum set for 650 MeV/c, run 355 was done on July 31st with a 550 MeV/c beam momentum, and run 926-929 were obtained in a single shift on November 3rd, also with a beam momentum of 550 MeV/c. The beam tune for the November data was greatly superior to that of the July data, how… more

Automated sample-processing and titration system for determining uranium in nuclear materials

Description: The system is designed for accurate, precise, and selective determination of from 10 to 180 mg of uranium in 2 to 12 cm/sup 3/ of solution. Samples, standards, and their solutions are handled on a weight basis. These weights, together with their appropriate identification numbers, are stored in computer memory and are used automatically in the assay calculations after each titration. The measurement technique (controlled-current coulometry) is based on the Davies-Gray and New Brunswick Laborato… more

Automated search for supernovae

Description: This thesis describes the design, development, and testing of a search system for supernovae, based on the use of current computer and detector technology. This search uses a computer-controlled telescope and charge coupled device (CCD) detector to collect images of hundreds of galaxies per night of observation, and a dedicated minicomputer to process these images in real time. The system is now collecting test images of up to several hundred fields per night, with a sensitivity corresponding t… more
