Cardiac and metabolic physiology of early larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) reflects parental swimming stamina

Description: This article explores swimming stamina in fish. Mature adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) were subjected to a swimming performance test and then bred within performance groups to discover if enhanced swimming stamina in offspring appears only in juveniles/adults, or if these traits appear as early as larvae.

In situ cardiac performance of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) at cold temperatures: long-term acclimation, acute thermal challenge and the role of adrenaline

Description: This article measures the cardiac performance of Newfoundland Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The results: (1) show that maximum performance of the isolated cod heart is not compromised by exposure to cold temperatures; and (2) support data from other studies, which show that, in contrast to salmonids, cod cardiac performance/myocardial contractility is not dependent upon humoral adrenergic stimulation.

Constraints-based stoichiometric analysis of hypoxic stress on steroidogenesis in fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas

Description: This article presents a study in which an in silico genome-scale metabolic model of steroidogenesis is used to investigate the effects of hypoxic stress on steroid hormone productions in fish. This article introduces a powerful model for pathway analysis that can lend insights on the effects of various stressor scenarios on metabolic functions.

Upper lethal temperatures of Northern Bobwhite embryos and the thermal properties of their eggs

Description: This article explores the upper lethal temperature for Bobwhite eggs. Results find that thermal tolerances of Northern Bobwhite embryos are high, indicating an adaptation to the naturally occurring temperature extremes in the Bobwhite's environment. However, the results also indicate that high temperatures could have plausibly contributed to the population decline observed in the Bobwhite's semi-arid range.
