Autonomous Motion Segmentation of Multiple Objects in Low Resolution Video Using Variational Level Sets

Description: This report documents research that was done during a ten week internship in the Sapphire research group at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory during the Summer of 2003. The goal of the study was to develop an algorithm that is capable of isolating (segmenting) moving objects in low resolution video sequences. This capability is currently being developed by the Sapphire research group as the first stage in a longer term video data mining project. This report gives a chronological accoun… more

Existing Evidence for the Fate of Neptunium in the Yucca Mountain Repository

Description: Neptunium, because of its long half life, is an element of long-term interest to the Yucca Mountain repository. The fate of neptunium under repository settings is unknown. This report provides a review and new interpretation of past tests on commercial spent nuclear fuel and experimental evidence on the fate of neptunium. Tests on commercial spent nuclear fuel preformed previously at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) used a bathtub setup by immersing spent fuel in either deionized wa… more

Cross Sections for n+89Y for En< 20 MeV

Description: Nuclear data collected in an experiment performed at LANSCE/WNR with the GEANIE spectrometer to measure the cross sections for n + {sup 89}Y for E{sub n} < 20 MeV are reported. The estimated (n,2n) cross sections to the ground and isomeric states of {sup 88}Y differ significantly from those listed in the RADCHEM data base. Folded with a fast neutron spectrum, these results lead to integral differences of +15%, +2%, and -70% vs. the RADCHEM evaluation.

Annual Energy Consumption Analysis Report for Richland Middle School

Description: Richland Middle School is a single story, 90,000 square feet new school located in Richland, WA. The design team proposed four HVAC system options to serve the building. The proposed HVAC systems are listed as following: (1) 4-pipe fan coil units served by electrical chiller and gas-fired boilers, (2) Ground-source closed water loop heat pumps with water loop heat pumps with boiler and cooling tower, and (3) VAV system served by electrical chiller and gas-fired boiler. This analysis estimates t… more

The Canoe Ridge Natural Gas Storage Project

Description: In 1999 the Pacific Gas and Electric Gas Transmission Northwest (GTN) drilled a borehole to investigate the feasibility of developing a natural gas-storage facility in a structural dome formed in Columbia River basalts in the Columbia Basin of south-central Washington State. The proposed aquifer storage facility will be an unconventional one where natural gas will be initially injected (and later retrieved) in one or multiple previous horizons (interflow zones) that are confined between deep (&… more

Towards Applications of Quantum Dots: Surface Modification and Novel Electronic Properties

Description: The possibility of quantum confinement causing the intense visible luminescence seen in porous Si, first mentioned by Canham in 1991, led to enormous interest in that material. The large blue-shift in the band gap and increase in luminescent efficiency attributed to quantum confinement in porous Si, while still controversial, continues to fuel research on colloidal Si nanoparticles prepared by sonicating porous Si, and by solution chemistry. This interest continues, and has led naturally to an … more

Bnl Very Long Baseline Experiment With a Super Neutrino Beam.

Description: An upgrade to the BNL AGS could produce a very intense proton source at a relatively low cost. This proton source could produce a conventional neutrino beam with a very significant flux at large distances from the laboratory. In this paper we examine the possibility of using this neutrino beam for a very long baseline oscillation experiment where a 500 kiloton water Cherenkov detector is situated at the Homestake mine in South Dakota. We study the physics potential of a high intensity neutrino … more

On the Performance of Parallel Algebraic Multigrid

Description: As algebraic multigrid (AMG) can be applied to a wide variety of problems on extremely large, unstructured grids on the one hand and massively parallel computer systems are available on the other hand, there has been a need for parallel implementations of AMG. This report analyses the performance of BoomerAMG[1], a parallel algorithm developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Abstracting the implementation we describe the basic components of the costly setup phase and analyze their be… more

LDRD Report FY 03: Structure and Function of Regulatory DNA: A Next Major Challenge in Genomics

Description: With the human genome sequence now available and high quality draft sequences of mouse, rat and many other creatures recently or soon to be released, the field of Genomics has entered an especially exciting phase. The raw materials for locating the {approx}30-40,000 human genes and understanding their basic structure are now online; next, the research community must begin to unravel the mechanisms through which those genes create the complexity of life. Laboratories around the world are already… more

Wood Pulp Digetster Wall Corrosion Investigation

Description: The modeling of the flow in a wood pulp digester is but one component of the investigation of the corrosion of digesters. This report describes the development of a Near-Wall-Model (NWM) that is intended to couple with a CFD model that determines the flow, heat, and chemical species transport and reaction within the bulk flow of a digester. Lubrication theory approximations were chosen from which to develop a model that could determine the flow conditions within a thin layer near the vessel wal… more

Treatment of SRS Tank 48H Simulants Using Fenton's Reagent

Description: High-level-waste Tank 48H at the Savannah River Site (SRS) contains about 50,000 lb of tetraphenylborate (TPB), which must be destroyed to return the tank to active service. Laboratory-scale tests were conducted to evaluate the use of Fenton's Reagent (hydrogen peroxide and a metal catalyst) to treat simulants of the Tank 48H waste. Samples of the treated slurry and the off-gas were analyzed to determine the reaction products. Process parameters developed earlier by AEA Technology were used for… more

Evaluation of Fire Hazards While Repackaging Plutonium-Contaminated Scrap in Hb-Line

Description: The potential for a fire while repackaging plutonium-contaminated scrap was evaluated. The surface-to-mass ratio indicates the metal alone will not spontaneously ignite. Uranium hydride can form when uranium metal is exposed to water vapor or hydrogen; uranium hydride reacts rapidly and energetically with atmospheric oxygen. The plutonium-contaminated scrap has been inside containers qualified for shipping, and these containers are leak-tight. The rate of diffusion of water vapor through the se… more

Taiwan: Major U.S. Arms Sales Since 1990

Description: This report discusses U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, or Republic of China (ROC), including policy issues for Congress and legislation. The Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), P.L. 96-8, has governed U.S. arms sales to Taiwan since 1979, when the United States recognized the People’s Republic of China (PRC) instead of the ROC. There are two other relevant elements of the “one China” policy: the August 17, 1982 U.S.-PRC Joint Communique and the “Six Assurances” made to Taiwan.
