The LEOS Interpolation Package

Description: This report describes the interpolation package in the Livermore Equation of State (LEOS) system. It is an updated and expanded version of report [1], which described the status of the package as of May 1998, and of [2], which described its status as of the August 2001 release of the LEOS access library, and of [3], which described its status as of library version 7.02, released April 2002. This corresponds to library version 7.11, released March 2003. The main change since [3] has been the add… more

Static and Dynamic Criticality: Are They Different?

Description: Let us start by stating that this paper does not contain anything new. It only contains material that has been known for decades, but which is periodically forgotten. As such this paper is intended merely to refresh people's memories. We will also mention that this paper is an example of the occasional discrepancy between textbook methodologies and real world applications, in the sense that the conclusions reached here contradict what it says in most textbooks, i.e., most textbooks incorrectly … more

Sets of Reports and Articles Regarding Cement Wastes Forms Containing Alpha Emitters that are Potentially Useful for Development of Russian Federation Waste Treatment Processes for Solidification of Weapons Plutonium MOX Fuel Fabrication Wastes for

Description: This is a set of nine reports and articles that were kindly provided by Dr. Christine A. Langton from the Savannah River Site (SRS) to L. J. Jardine LLNL in June 2003. The reports discuss cement waste forms and primarily focus on gas generation in cement waste forms from alpha particle decays. However other items such as various cement compositions, cement product performance test results and some cement process parameters are also included. This set of documents was put into this Lawrence Live… more

3D Computations and Experiments

Description: This project is in its first full year after the combining of two previously funded projects: ''3D Code Development'' and ''Dynamic Material Properties''. The motivation behind this move was to emphasize and strengthen the ties between the experimental work and the computational model development in the materials area. The next year's activities will indicate the merging of the two efforts. The current activity is structured in two tasks. Task A, ''Simulations and Measurements'', combines all t… more

AFCI Repository Impact Evaluation Report Systems Analysis Progress - FY03

Description: This activity will assess the waste management benefits from AFC, specifically both short and long term benefits for the U.S. geologic repository program. This includes quantitative evaluation of repository issues (heat load and thermal management, mass and volume, radiotoxicity and dose, waste form optimization, etc.) where AFC can provide the technical basis for improvements in cost, capacity and performance for a repository, and the technical potential to defer the need for additional reposi… more

Limits to Enhanced IR Layering Set by Long Scale Ablator Roughness

Description: We show that long scale-length ablator roughness sets a limit to the enhanced IR layering power possible in a NIF ignition hohlraum. This limit can be more restrictive than the limit set by thermal conduction. High IR power absorption, characteristic of the ablator material, combined with ablator roughness can produce ice thickness variations which exceed the NIF ice layer roughness specification. For example, if the capsule IR absorption coefficient is greater than 13 cm{sup -1}, the max IR po… more

Stretched and Filtered Transport Precondititioning of Sn Problems Part 2: Heterogeneous Media

Description: In [1], we presented the stretched filtered transport synthetic acceleration method (SFTSA) for homogeneous media. Both SFTSA and SFTSA preconditioned Krylov were shown to be effective iterative schemes in homogeneous media due to the predictable structure of the iteration eigenvalues. In heterogeneous media or on non-uniform grids, the eigenvalue structure is unpredictable for general problems, making the filter strength a for optimal SFTSA extremely problem dependent. Leaving Q set to the opt… more

SERDP Project Final Report: Integrated Automated Analyzer for Monitoring of Explosives in Groundwater

Description: The objective of this project is to develop a portable analytical system based on the on-line/on-chip coupling of a miniaturized sample processing system with a microfabricated capillary electrophoresis/electrochemical detector for fast separation/detection of explosives and their degradation products in groundwater. Such a system has the potential to provide reliable, cost-effective characterization of groundwater contamination at DoD sites that are undergoing closure and remediation. A capill… more

Atoms for Peace After 50 Years: The New Challenges and Opportunities

Description: This report draws on a series of international workshops held to mark the fiftieth anniversary of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace address before the United Nations General Assembly. A half-century after President Eisenhower's landmark speech, the world is vastly different, but mankind still faces the challenge he identified--gaining the benefits of nuclear technology in a way that limits the risks to security. Fifty years after Eisenhower declared that the people of the world s… more

Optical Spectroscopy of Strongly Correlated (MOTT-HUBBARD, Heavy-Fermion, Unconventional Superconductor) Materials Tuned Pressure

Description: During the past years, the Co-PI's have been responsible for the development and operation of optical techniques (Raman, IR, fluorescence, absorption and reflectance spectroscopy at ultrahigh pressures and high and low temperatures) which have proven to be extremely powerful for studying low-Z, molecular solids including hydrogen, ice, etc. (see results below). Meanwhile, it has become increasingly clear that optical spectroscopy has an equally extraordinary potential for studying metals and su… more

Analytical Solutions for Testing Ray-Effect Errors in Numerical Solutions of the Transport Equation

Description: This paper contains three analytical solutions of transport problems which can be used to test ray-effect errors in the numerical solutions of the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE). We derived the first two solutions and the third was shown to us by M. Prasad [2]. Since this paper is intended to be an internal LLNL report, no attempt was made to find the original derivations of the solutions in the literature in order to cite the authors for their work. Before we embarked on this project, the … more

Nuclear Structure of the Closed Subshell Nucleus 90Zr Studied with the (n,n'(gamma)) Reaction

Description: States in {sup 90}Zr have been observed with the (n,n{prime}{gamma}) reaction using both spallation and monoenergetic accelerator-produced neutrons. A scheme comprised of 81 levels and 157 transitions was constructed concentrating on levels below 5.6 MeV in excitation energy. Spins have been determined by considering data from all experimental studies performed for {sup 90}Zr. Lifetimes have been deduced using the Doppler-shift attenuation method for many of the states and transition rates have… more
