Advanced research for the characterization of hydrogen donor solvents in two-stage liquefaction. Quarterly report, April 1, 1984-June 30, 1984

Description: Solvent-only reactions at SCT conditions in hydrogen were explored for each of the four blended solvents, ranging from 6.1 to 8.6 wt. % hydrogen content (nominally 6.1, 7.7, 7.4, 8.6). Generally, no loss of solvent to gas was measured, but small amounts of retrograde reactions (oil to preasphaltenes, asphaltenes, insolubles) were observed at both low and high severity. Insolubles were produced in solvent A (6.1% H) and consumed in solvent D (8.6% H). Ten hydrotreating and hydrocracking catalyst… more

Altering the Volumetric Expansion Ratio of a Lysholm Helical Screw Expander

Description: This is an analysis of the effects of the volumetric expansion ratio on the operation of a Lysholm helical screw expander. Extensive testing of the University of California Lysholm engine with a 5.3 volumetric expansion ratio was performed. In this experiment, the expansion ratio has been reduced from 5.3 to 4.0. Tests were performed at a variety of speeds and qualities for a 5.0 pressure ratio and at a variety of speeds and pressure ratios for 99 percent quality. It was predicted that decreasi… more

Analysis of nuclear power plant component failures

Description: Items are shown that have caused 90% of the nuclear unit outages and/or deratings between 1971 and 1980 and the magnitude of the problem indicated by an estimate of power replacement cost when the units are out of service or derated. The funding EPRI has provided on these specific items for R and D and technology transfer in the past and the funding planned in the future (1982 to 1986) are shown. EPRI's R and D may help the utilities on only a small part of their nuclear unit outage problems. F… more

Analytic solution for the problem of gridded gap-electron flow interaction

Description: The present study is motivated by the modelling of high-power klystrons. The two basic components of a Klystron are the resonant cavities and the drift spaces. This paper addresses only the first of these two components. Modelling of the drift spaces is deferred to future work. The formulation is not restricted to Klystron modelling, but is applicable to any problem involving the interaction of an electron beam with a resonant cavity. While the theory of Klystrons has been worked out in detail … more

Annual report, October 1, 1981-September 30, 1982

Description: The construction of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) has been proceeding in a highly satisfactory manner, giving confidence that the project schedule will be met. The vacuum vessel and toroidal-field coil systems are now in place, and the entire mechanical assembly process is about to be completed. Experimental operation of TFTR will begin with ohmic-heating studies in early CY83, and will proceed to intensive neutral-beam heating in CY84. Radio-frequency experiments on the Princeton Larg… more

APL/JHU free flight tests of the General Purpose Heat Source module. Testing: 5-7 March 1984

Description: Purpose of the test was to obtain statistical information on the dynamics of the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) module at terminal speeds. Models were designed to aerodynamically and dynamically represent the GPHS module. Normal and high speed photographic coverage documented the motion of the models. This report documents test parameters and techniques for the free-spin tests. It does not include data analysis.

Application of the pulsed magnetic welding process to nuclear breeder reactor fuel pin end closures

Description: The pulsed magnetic welding process is a solid state welding process in which metallurgical bonding is effected by impacting metal or alloy parts against each other at high velocity by use of controlled high frequency, high intensity pulsed magnetic fields. This process is similar to the explosive welding process except that magnetic energy is used for impacting the parts together instead of using explosive energy. The pulsed magnetic welding (PMW) process is readily applied to the welding of c… more

Application of the SULF-X process to coal conversion and utilization. Phase II final report

Description: Pittsburgh Environmental and Energy Systems, Inc. contracted with the Department of Energy to demonstrate the efficacy of an iron sulfide flue gas treatment system (FGT) for removing sulfur dioxide (SO/sub 2/) and nitrogen oxides (NO/sub x/) and to correlate process variables to system performance. Laboratory and bench-scale testing was conducted with the SULF-X process, using both synthesized gas and actual flue gas from a coal-fired furnace. Laboratory tests resulted in 95% SO/sub 2/ removal … more

Assessment of degradation concerns for spent fuel, high-level wastes, and transuranic wastes in monitored retrievalbe storage

Description: It has been concluded that there are no significant degradation mechanisms that could prevent the design, construction, and safe operation of monitored retrievable storage (MRS) facilities. However, there are some long-term degradation mechanisms that could affect the ability to maintain or readily retrieve spent fuel (SF), high-level wastes (HLW), and transuranic wastes (TRUW) several decades after emplacement. Although catastrophic failures are not anticipated, long-term degradation mechanism… more

Assessment of H-Coal process developments: impact on the performance and economics of a proposed commercial plant

Description: This report assesses the performance of the H-Coal process, a catalytic direct liquefaction process, at a process development and large pilot-plant scale of operation. The assessment focused on the evaluation of operating results from selected long-term successful process development unit (PDU) and pilot plant runs made on Illinois No. 6 coal. The pilot plant has largely duplicated the product yield structure obtained during the PDU runs. Also, the quality of products, particularly liquid produ… more

Basalt glass: an analogue for the evaluation of the long-term stability of nuclear waste form borosilicate glasses

Description: The long-term stability of nuclear waste form borosilicate glasses can be evaluated by understanding the processes that effect the long-term alteration of glass and by comparing laboratory alteration of synthetic basalt and borosilicate glasses with the observed stability of naturally occurring basaltic glasses in diverse geologic environments. This paper presents detailed electron microprobe analyses of naturally altered basaltic glasses (with maximum ages of 10,000 to 20 million years) from l… more

Basalt nuclear-waste repository remote sensing using electromagnetic techniques

Description: The electromagnetic permittivity and attenuation rate of basalt, from the Near Surface Test Facility of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project at Hanford, Washington, have been measured in the laboratory as a function of water content at frequencies from 25 MHz to 1000 MHz. Both the permittivity and the attenuation rate are strongly related to water content of basalt in this frequency range. Completely dehydrated, the rock has a frequency-independent relative permittivity of about 8 and attenuation… more

Beta-delayed proton activities: /sup 147/Dy and /sup 149/Er

Description: The present paper discusses mainly the ..beta..-delayed proton spectra of /sup 147/Dy and of the hitherto unknown isotope, /sup 149/Er. However, following the submittal of the abstract for this conference we have now observed delayed protons following the decay of /sup 145/Dy. Additionally, we have identified a 0.5-s delayed-proton emitter and tentatively assign it to the new isotope, /sup 151/Yb.

Cable fabrication procedures for the BPM System

Description: The Beam Position Monitor (BPM) System is a critical component of beam steering and control. It consists of the Beam Position Monitors (in the beamline), electronic signal processors (located remotely) and the cables that interconnect the two. Each BPM produces four signals. These four signals are then compared electronically with each other. Differences in amplitude among these signals is converted into information about the position of the beam as it passed that particular BPM. In order to pr… more
