Calorimetric assay of HTGR fuel samples

Description: A calorimeter using a neutron source was designed and fabricated by Mound Laboratory, according to ORNL specifications. A calibration curve of the device for HTGR standard fuel rods was experimentally determined. The precision of a single measurement at the 95% confidence level was estimated to be +-0.8 ..mu..W. For a fuel sample containing 0.3 g /sup 235/U and a neutron source containing 691 ..mu..g /sup 252/Cf, this represents a relative standard deviation of 0.5%. Measurement time was approx… more

Characterization of the Hanford 300 Area Burial Grounds. Task II. Geochemical analysis

Description: The geochemical interaction of radionuclides with geologic materials must be understood in order to assess radionuclide migration from waste burial structures. In Task II, Geochemical Analysis, soil samples were taken from a representative disposal site to provide information that could be applied to the retired 300 Area Burial Grounds on the Department of Energy's Hanford Site, Washington. The site chosen for evaluation was the 316-4 Crib, which received liquid waste containing hexone and a to… more

Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility. Quarterly report, January-March, 1979

Description: The general operations and accomplishments of the Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility during the period from January 1, 1979 through March 31, 1979 are summarized. The construction and installation of a reactor clarifier/media filter system to treat the effluent brine continued. Startup is expected during the next reporting period. Operations of the facility evaluated the two stage flash cycle characteristics of brines from the second production well (Woolsey No. 1). The results were similar … more

Accuracy of small diameter sheathed thermocouples for the core flow test loop

Description: This report summarizes the research and development on 0.5-mm-diameter, compacted, metal sheathed thermocouples. The objectives of this research effort have been: to identify and analyze the sources of temperature measurement errors in the use of 0.5-mm-diameter sheathed thermocouples to measure the surface temperature of the cladding of fuel-rod simulators in the Core Flow Test Loop (CFTL) at ORNL; to devise methods for reducing or correcting for these temperature measurement errors; to estima… more

Computer language evaluation for MFTF SCDS

Description: The computer languages available for the systems and application implementation on the Supervisory Control and Diagnostics System (SCDS) for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) were surveyed and evaluated. Four language processors, CAL (Common Assembly Language), Extended FORTRAN, CORAL 66, and Sequential Pascal (SPASCAL, a subset of Concurrent Pascal (CPASCAL)) are commercially available for the Interdata 7/32 and 8/32 computers that constitute the SCDS. Of these, the Sequential Pascal avai… more

Residential energy-consumption analysis utilizing the DOE-1 computer program

Description: The DOE-1 computer program is used to examine energy consumption in a typical middle-class household in Cincinnati, Ohio. The program is used to compare energy consumption under different structural and environmental conditions, including various levels of insulation in the walls and ceiling, double and single glazing of windows, and thermostat setback schedules. In addition, the DOE-1 program is used to model the house under three energy distribution systems: a unit heater, a single-zone fan s… more

Calculation of neutron cross sections on isotopes of yttrium and zirconium. [Multestep, Hauser-Feshbach calculations, pre-equtetrium corrections, 0. 001 to 20 MeV tables]

Description: Multistep Hauser-Feshbach calculations with preequilibrium corrections were made for neutron-induced reactions on yttrium and zirconium isotopes between 0.001 and 20 MeV. Recently new neutron cross-section data have been measured for unstable isotopes of these elements. These data, along with results from charged-particle simulation of neutron reactions, provide unique opportunities under which to test nuclear-model techniques and parameters in this mass region. A complete and consistent analys… more

Solar availability for winter space heating: an analysis of the calendar period 1953-1975

Description: Solar availability for space heating has been determined from an analysis of SOLMET data tapes for eight US sites. The tapes contain hourly readings of insolation and ambient temperature for the period 1953-1975. Scatter-diagrams of insolation versus heating degree-days, compiled on a daily basis, indicate a wide variation in insolation levels, even during periods of coldest weather. For seven of the eight sites, the peak-day backup energy required by a solar space heating system exceeded 85% o… more

Structure and electrical activity of planar defects in EFG ribbons. First quarterly report, January 1--March 31, 1979

Description: The structure and electrical activity of planar defects in EFG Silicon was investigated by optical, electron beam induced current (EBIC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). What appears to be twin boundaries by both optical microscopy + etching, and by EBIC are in reality systems of microtwins, some of which are only a few atomic lattice planes thick. The electrical activity of planar defects appears to be correlated with emission of dislocations especially at termination points. Impur… more
