THREE AND FOUR CENTER ELIMINATION OF HC1 IN THE MULTIPHOTON DISSOCIATION OF HALOGENATED HYDROCARBONS

Description: Three and four center unimolecular elimination reactions of HCl have been investigated for CHF{sub 2}Cl, CHFCL{sub 2}, CH{sub 3}CCl{sub 3}, CH{sub 3}CF{sub 2}Cl and in a molecular beam experiment using infrared multiphoton absorption to energize the molecule. The translational energy distributions obtained in this work show that the average translational energy released to the fragments is around 8-12 kcal/mole, except for the three center elimination reaction from CHClCF{sub 2}, which gives a … more

Time Evolution of Mass Flows in a Collisional Tokamak

Description: The time evolution, due to dissipative processes, of an initial pattern of poloidal and toroidal mass flows in a tokamak is considered. The calculation is applicable to a collisional, low ..beta.., axisymmetric tokamak of arbitrary minor cross section. Time rates of change of poloidal flows which are subsonic but larger than the diamagnetic speed are given according to the magnitude of the flow and the collisionality of the plasma. Over most of parameter space for typical tokamaks, the poloidal… more

Total Energy Recovery System for Agribusiness: Lake County study. Final report

Description: A brief summary is given of the results of a previously reported study designed to evaluate the costs and viability of combined thermodynamic and biologic cycles in a system known as the Total Energy Recovery System for Agribusiness (TERSA). This conceptual system involved the combined geothermally assisted activities of greenhouse crop and mushroom growing, fish farming, and biogas generation in an integrated biologic system such that the waste or by-products of each subsystem cycle were recov… more

Two-dimensional computer simulation of hypervelocity impact cratering: some preliminary results for Meteor Crater, Arizona

Description: A computational approach used for subsurface explosion cratering has been extended to hypervelocity impact cratering. Meteor (Barringer) Crater, Arizona, was selected for our first computer simulation because it was the most thoroughly studied. It is also an excellent example of a simple, bowl-shaped crater and is one of the youngest terrestrial impact craters. Shoemaker estimates that the impact occurred about 20,000 to 30,000 years ago (Roddy (1977)). Initial conditions for this calculation i… more

Unified connected theory of few-body reaction mechanisms in N-body scattering theory

Description: A unified treatment of different reaction mechanisms in nonrelativistic N-body scattering is presented. The theory is based on connected kernel integral equations that are expected to become compact for reasonable constraints on the potentials. These equations can be formulated for any important set of asymptotic channels. The operators T/sub +-//sup ab/(A) are approximate transition operators that describe the scattering proceeding through an arbitrary reaction mechanism A. These operators are… more

Uranium hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance of the Rawlins NTMS quadrangle, Wyoming

Description: During the spring and winter of 1976 and January and June of 1977, 570 natural water and 1281 waterborne sediment samples were collected from 1369 locations in the Rawlins, Wyoming, NTMS quadrangle. The samples obtained from this 18 700-km/sup 2/ area were analyzed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for total uranium. The uranium concentrations in waters ranged from less than the detectable limit of 0.2 parts per billion (ppB) to 448 ppB, with a mean value of 6 ppB. The concentrations in s… more

Uranium in alkaline rocks

Description: Geologic and geochemical criteria were developed for the occurrence of economic uranium deposits in alkaline igneous rocks. A literature search, a limited chemical analytical program, and visits to three prominent alkaline-rock localities (Ilimaussaq, Greenland; Pocos de Caldas, Brazil; and Powderhorn, Colorado) were made to establish criteria to determine if a site had some uranium resource potential. From the literature, four alkaline-intrusive occurrences of differing character were identifi… more

Utilization of the NFS West Valley Installation for spent fuel storage

Description: Several thousand MT of capacity of AFR storage will be required in the 1980's. The pool at NFS has capacity for an additional 60 MT of BWR fuel or 150 MT of PWR assemblies. Zircaloy-clad LWR fuel can be stored in pools for up to 100 years. Environmental effects are discussed. Expansion of the pool capacity for as much as 1000 MT more, either by using more compact storage racks or constructing a new pool or an independent pool, is considered. Some indication of the environmental impacts of expan… more

Validation and software documentation of the ANL fish-impingement model. [Mathematical model evaluation]

Description: This report contains the results of a validation test of the ANL Fish Impingement Model. By the use of 1974 fish-impingement and environmental data from the Zion Nuclear Power Station, it is shown that the modified and expanded mathematical model yields reasonably good results in calculations of daily fish-impingement losses at the cooling water intakes. Comparisons confirmed that the fish-impingement process depends primarily on the abundance of fish in the vicinity of a cooling water intake, … more

Weldability testing of alloy 800

Description: The weldability of various heats of alloy 800 was compared by the Tigamajig hot-cracking test. This testing was conducted to determine if the test could rank the relative hot-cracking tendencies of the various heats and therefore provide a measure of weldability for future alloy 800 heats before their being assigned to nuclear component fabrication. The test accurately detected a heat that had exhibited hot-cracking in the heat-affected zone of actual weldments. Neither this work nor that of ot… more
