Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Twenty-Second Quarterly Progress Report

Description: Progress is reported for a program whose goals are to demonstrate an experimental upgraded gas turbine-powered automobile which meets the 1978 Federal Emissions Standards, has significantly improved fuel economy, and is competitive in performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine-powered, compact-size American automobile. Activity during this twenty-second program quarter has continued to emphasize development towards correcting a power deficienc… more

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon (Phase II). Silicon material task, Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Tenth quarterly progress report, January 1--March 31, 1978

Description: Progress from January 1 to March 31, 1978, is reported in design of the 50 MT/year experimental facility for the preparation of high-purity silicon by the zinc vapor reduction of silicon tetrachloride in a fluidized bed of seed particles to form a free-flowing granular product. The design of the experimental facility has been concluded and sent to JPL for evaluation. It is also being critiqued by an independent pilot plant design group at BCL. Detailed analyses of equipment and construction cos… more

Investigations of Intermetallic Alloy Hydriding Mechanisms. Annual Progress Report, July 1, 1977--April 30, 1978

Description: Measurements of hydridation of thin films are described. Film deposition by rf sputtering is discussed and studies of microstructure changes due to hydridation are presented. The influence of factors such as alloy composition, microstructural details, surface layers or contaminants and physical properties on hydriding characteristics such as the kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption, quantities absorbed, heats of hydriding and the effects of long-term absorption-desorption cycling were… more

Acoustic emission intrusion detector

Description: In order to improve the security of handling special nuclear materials at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, a sensitive acoustic emission detector has been developed that will detect forcible entry through block or tile walls, concrete floors, or concrete/steel vault walls. A small, low-powered processor was designed to convert the output from a sensitive, crystal-type acoustic transducer to an alarm relay signal for use with a supervised alarm loop. The unit may be used to detect forcible entry throug… more

Conceptual studies and preliminary design of a fluid bed fired boiler for service in an electric utility

Description: As a part of this study, B and W was to develop fluid bed system design bases and parameters using any and all sources available. The design parameters used for the fluid bed boiler designs in this study were actually developed by B and W as part of their in-house AFB development program and also as a part of the subject design study. To properly carry out the assessment portion of the work it was essential to develop an understanding of the basic interrelationship of variables in order that th… more

Light duty vehicle fuel consumption model, 1975-1986

Description: The report summarizes the Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Consumption Model developed for the Office of Conservation and Advanced Energy Systems Policy in the Department of Energy. The purpose of the model is to estimate annual passenger auto (PA) and non-passenger auto (NPA) fuel consumption through 1986. The model is intended to: (1) provide information on future estimated petroleum demand for the majority of the US transportation sector; and (2) generate a better understanding of the trends in fuel … more

Development of ultrafiltration and inorganic adsorbents for reducing volumes of low-level and intermediate-level liquid waste: January--March 1978

Description: The exposure of noncellulosic ultrafiltration membranes to a radioactive environment simulating up to 24 months of exposure to a beta dose of 10 ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ and a gamma dose of 10/sup -5/ ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ did not show any conclusive evidence of membrane degradation. Viscosity measurements for control membranes and irradiated membranes indicate no changes in polymer molecular weight were caused by the radiation exposure. This, in turn, suggests no physical or mechanical degradation took… more

DT fusion neutron irradiation of two LLL superconductor wires at 4. 2/sup 0/K

Description: The DT fusion neutron irradiation of two LLL superconductor wires at 4.2/sup 0/K is described. The sample position, beam-on time, and neutron dose record are given. The results from four ''profile'' dosimetry foils measuring the lateral variation in neutron flux are included.

Hydrodynamic design report intermediate size inducer pump for sodium operation

Description: An inducer pump has been designed to fit within the existing housing of the FFTF Facility. The design has been shown to meet the specified requirements in every area where an analytical prediction of the performance can be made. The head-rise and efficiency of the pump have design margins so that the calculated values actually exceed requirements over the full range of operation. The suction performance of the design provides a very large margin at the operating NPSH value which is the major ad… more

Mass transfer in three-phase fluidized beds

Description: The effects of superficial liquid and gas velocity, particle diameter, liquid viscosity, and column diameter on liquid dispersion (E/sub L) and mass transfer (K/sub L/a) in three-phase fluidized beds were investigated using a water--glycerol/oxygen--nitrogen (or oxygen--argon)/glass-bead system. Overall mass transfer coefficients were calculated based on plug flow, dispersed plug flow, and continuously stirred tank models. k/sub L/a was found to increase with gas velocity and particle diameter,… more

Nuclear waste projections and source-term data for FY 1977

Description: A description of the light-water reactor (LWR) fuel cycle and the nature of the radioactive wastes is basic to the design and evaluation of terminal waste repositories. For these projections, the fuel cycle is represented as a typical system of operations related to the back end of the LWR fuel cycle. Wastes, as prepared for disposal, are described in terms of form, volume, radioactivity, heat generation, and weight. To obtain these waste projections, three fuel management computer codes were u… more

Phase 2 of the Array Automated Assembly Task for the Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. First quarterly report, October 1, 1977--December 31, 1977

Description: A process sequence is proposed and analyzed with regard to yield and cost of direct materials for fabrication. Cells of at least 13% conversion efficiency and panels of 10% efficiency have been assumed. Material costs, excluding silicon, were estimated as low as $0.19/watt (1975). Use of the JPL Interim Price Estimation Guidelines gives a projected contribution to selling price of $0.24/watt (1975) for the direct materials used in processing. If silicon is included, the contribution to selling … more
