Electrical compensation system for plated-through-hole tester. Milestone report

Description: A microprocessor system has been developed to control the acquisition and interpretation of resistance-measurement data from plated-through holes in printed wiring boards. The system provides a direct digital display of the thickness of the copper plating on the hole walls. The complex calibration for holes having different geometries is stored in the memory of the system, and the geometry factors are input through thumbwheel switches. A special probe system makes possible the determination of … more

Reprocessing flowsheet and material balance for MEU spent fuel

Description: In response to nonproliferation concerns, the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) Fuel Recycle Development Program is investigating the processing requirements for a denatured medium-enriched uranium--thorium (MEU/Th) fuel cycle. Prior work emphasized the processing requirements for a high-enriched uranium--thorium (HEU/Th) fuel cycle. This report presents reprocessing flowsheets for an HTGR/MEU fuel recycle base case. Material balance data have been calculated for reprocessing of spent … more

Controlled sample program publication No. 1: characterization of rock samples.

Description: A description is presented of the methodology used and the geologic parameters measured on several rocks which are being used in round-robin laboratory and nuclide adsorption methodology experiments. Presently investigators from various laboratories are determining nuclide distribution coefficients utilizing numerous experimental techniques. Unfortunately, it appears that often the resultant data are dependent not only on the type of groundwater and rock utilized, but also on the experimentor o… more

Model for estimating the effects of surface roughness on mass ejection from shocked materials

Description: A statistical model is presented for estimating the effects of surface roughness on mass ejection from shocked surfaces. In the model, roughness is characterized by the total volume of defects, such as pits, scratches and machine marks, on a surface. The amount of material ejected from these defects during shock loading can be estimated by assuming that jetting from surface depressions is the primary mode of ejection and by making simplifying assumptions about jetting processes. Techniques are … more

Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Geothermal Energy Program. A Status Report on the Development of the Total-Flow Concept

Description: The technology development activities of the Geothermal Energy Program at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory are summarized. Significant progress toward development of the Total-Flow concept was made during FY 1978. The results show that the original goal of 70% engine efficiency for the Total-Flow impulse turbine is achievable, that a Total-Flow system is competitive economically with conventional systems, and that the Total-Flow concept offers the benefit of more efficient utilization of geoth… more

Bonding in inorganic compounds: a study by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Description: Core electron binding energies were measured for a variety of inorganic and organometallic compounds using gas-phase X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The atomic charge distributions in these molecules are deduced from the binding energies, often leading to a better understanding of the bonding in these compounds. The XPS spectra of fifteen volatile tin compounds were recorded. The data suggest that the metal d orbitals are not significantly involved in the bonding. The oxygen ls XPS spec… more

Some statistical problems inherent in radioactive-source detection. [Searching for lost radiation source with moving detector system]

Description: Some of the statistical questions associated with problems of detecting random-point-process signals embedded in random-point-process noise are examined. An example of such a problem is that of searching for a lost radioactive source with a moving detection system. The emphasis is on theoretical questions, but some experimental and Monte Carlo results are used to test the theoretical results. Several idealized binary decision problems are treated by starting with simple, specific situations and… more

Resistive ballooning mode equation

Description: A second-order ordinary differential equation on each flux surface is derived for the high mode number limit of resistive MHD ballooning modes in tokamaks with arbitrary cross section, aspect ratio, and shear. The equation is structurally similar to that used to study ideal MHD ballooning modes computationally. The model used in this paper indicates that all tokamak plasmas are unstable, with growth rate proportional to resistivity when the pressure gradient is less than the critical value need… more

Intermediate report on the performance of plate-type ice-maker heat pumps

Description: A prototype ice-maker heat pump obtained from Remcor Products Company and a two-plate unit developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory were tested under the Annual Cycle Energy System program. Results were compared for the effect of harvesting scheme and evaporator plate loading on performance in both water-chilling and ice-making modes. The Remcor scheme of using compressor discharge gas for harvesting exacts a heavy penalty on performance during short freeze cycles, whereas the two-plate unit … more

Role of Neurotransmitters and Protein Synthesis in Short- and Long-Term Memory

Description: Anisomycin is an effective inhibitor of cerebral protein synthesis in mice and is also an effective amnestic agent for both passive and active behavioral tasks. From use of anisomycin in combination with a variety of stimulant and depressant drugs, we conclude that the level of arousal following acquisition plays an important role in determining the duration and the rate of the biosynthetic phase of memory formation. While we have interpreted the experiments with anisomycin as evidence for an e… more
