Terrestrial photovoltaic power systems with sunlight concentration. Annual progress report, January 1, 1975--December 31, 1975

Description: This annual report is for the second year of a program to investigate the characteristics of the components and the total system using sunlight concentrated onto solar cells. The second year was primarily to experimentally investigate the conclusions of the first year of analytical studies. Cells have been fabricated that are designed for different intensities. Typically the efficiency of a cell will increase from its 11 percent at AM1 peak to efficiency at the designed concentration level and … more

Safety analysis report for Fort. St. Vrain test elements FTE-1 through FTE-8. Proposed supplement to the Final Safety Analysis Report for Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station

Description: The eight fuel test elements proposed for inclusion into Segment 7 (first reload) of the Fort St. Vrain Nuclear reactor are described. It also presents the results of the analysis of the effects of the test elements on plant normal operation and plant safety. Since the eight test elements represent a very small percentage of the core (0.4 percent), the analysis confirms that the test elements have a very small effect on the operation of the core underall conditions. The test elements will be ma… more

Analysis of nuclear waste management

Description: An event tree is developed, outlining ways which radioactivity can be accidentally released from high level solidified wastes. Probabilities are assigned to appropriate events in the tree and the major contributors to dose to the general population are identified. All doses are computed on a per megawatt electric-year basis. Sensitivity relations between the expected dose and key characteristics of the solidified wasted are developed.

High-pressure tritium equipment

Description: Some solutions to problems of compressing and containing tritium gas to 200 MPa at 700 K are discussed The principal emphasis is on commercial compressors and high-pressure equipment that can be modified easily by the researcher for safe use with tritium. Experience with metal belows and diaphragm compressors has been favorable. Selection of materials, fittings and gauges for high- pressure tritium work also is reviewed briefly.

Obstacle-induced hardening and softening in metallic materials. Technical progress report, February 1, 1976--January 31, 1977

Description: During the past contract year, new results have been obtained in two on-going project areas: (1) surface oxide softening and solute gradients in niobium and tantalum, and (2) mechanical properties of Nb-H, Nb-D, and Nb-O-H alloys. The important results include: (a) characterization of the large softening and ductilizing effect of niobium and tantalum caused by thin (50-100 nm) surface oxide films; (b) determination of the role of interstitial impurities in the strengthening and ductility change… more

Research on the physical properties of geothermal reservoir rocks. Summary report on collection of samples of volcanic rocks for petrophysical studies. Progress report 1. [From the Snake River Plain, the Columbia Plateaus, the Cascade Range, the Modoc, south central Nevada, and Jemez volcanic fields]

Description: Rock samples were collected from the Snake River Plain volcanic depression of Idaho, the Columbia Plateau's volcanic basin located in southeastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, and western Idaho, the Modoc volcanic province of northeastern California, the volcanic fields of south central Nevada, and the Jemez volcanic field of north central New Mexico. Strategy governing sample selection is described. From each field, 64 individual rock samples, each being several kilograms in size, were col… more

Gamma scanning the primary circuit of the Peach Bottom HTGR

Description: The plateout distribution of gamma-emitting nuclides in the primary circuit of the Peach Bottom HTGR at end-of-life has been determined by in situ gamma scanning. The specific activity was mapped by scanning the accessible ducting at 12 locations with a Ge(Li) detector and by axially traversing 79 steam generator tubes with travelling CdTe detectors from the water side. Following destructive removal of trepan samples, a travelling intrinsic germanium detector was inserted sequentially into two … more

Effect of the relative humidity in test atmospheres on uranium--0. 75% titanium and uranium--2. 25% niobium alloys

Description: Tensile tests of uranium--0.75 percent titanium and uranium--2.25 percent niobium alloys showed decreased ductility values with an increased humidity of the test atmosphere (12 to 80 percent rh). Similar results were obtained when the specimens were coated with a commercial rust preventive prior to testing. Results show that testing of the alloys should not be performed in laboratory atmospheres above a 50 percent relative humidity. The tensile-test ductility was not degraded in a dry argon atm… more
