Geothermal energy: feasibility study

Description: A research program initiated to investigate the feasibility of using the geothermal energy available in salt domes to generate electrical power and of using cavities developed in salt domes as high temperature, high pressure chemical reaction vessels for converting municipal wastes to fuel oil or gas is described. Power generation from geothermal was not found to be economically feasible. The conversion of waste to fuel is possible if the problems of cavity collapse can be avoided. (MHR)

Geohydrological Environmental Effects of Geothermal Power Production, Phase IIA.

Description: The numerical techniques embodied in the fully interactive reservoir simulator (AGRESS) are described; the results of the calculation for the five-spot production/injection pattern are also presented. The analysis of the pressure drawdown and buildup tests for geothermal reservoirs is presented. The effects of in-formation flashing of brines both near a wellbore and at levels above the producing horizon are described. The thermodynamic equation of state package for sodium chloride/water solutions is described. The calculations simulate the production and subsidence history of Wairakei field. Future research plans are outlined. (MHR)

GRAY: a program to calculate gray-body radiation heat-transfer view factors from black-body view factors

Description: Program GRAY is written to perform the matrix manipulations necessary to convert black-body radiation heat-transfer view factors to gray-body view factors as required by thermal analyzer codes. The black-body view factors contain only geometric relationships. Program GRAY allows the effects of multiple gray-body reflections to be included. The resulting effective gray-body factors can then be used with the corresponding fourth-power temperature differences to obtain the net radiative heat flux. The program is written to accept a matrix input or the card image output generated by the black-body view factor program CNVUFAC. The resulting card image output generated by GRAY is in a form usable by the TRUMP thermal analyzer.

Geothermal down-well pumping system. Final report

Description: A novel method of pumping geothermal hot brines is described. A discussion of the reasons for pumping and a description of the system is reported. The results of the turbopump laboratory tests are documented. The design, construction, and test of a higher flow-rate pump impeller and first-stage diffuser; detailed design improvements in the TPU and continued endurance testing of it; and preliminary planning tasks for the subsequent down-well testing program are covered.
