ANFOL synthesis. [Quarterly report], April--June 1971

Description: A new method was developed for chlorination of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid with PCl{sub 5} using a Soxhlet extraction apparatus as the addition vessel. Acid used was that reclaimed from the purification of the crude acid chloride of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid supplied by LRL. Synthesis of FEFO plasticized AFNOL has been scaled up to a nominal 30-pound batch. Small batches and cure tests were run prior to the scaleup. Cure rate of the AFNOL system was followed by infrared spectrophotometry. The tempera… more

He formulation. [Quarterly report], July--September 1971

Description: Four batches of experimental PETN have been made for incorporation into LX-13 (Extex). A control batch was reprecipitated in the conventional manner (shock reprecipitation from acetone into violently agitated water) while three batches were made in the Micronizer: Two of these were treated with MRL 22A.with one of the treated batches being heat stabilized for 8 hours at 116 C. Two 500-pound batches of RX-04-EC (4% Viton A) were made to supply material for the special studies of the effects of d… more

Implementation of detonation electric effects. [Quarterly report], January--March 1971

Description: Detonation electric effect measurement was applied to a stack of PMMA discs on the output of an explosive PWL to resolve some anomalies previously observed in the arrival times of a shock wave as it passes through the various interfaces. A brief description of the experiments and some comments on the results are included.

An investigation of the feasibility of building a harbor on the West coast of South America using explosive power of nuclear weapons, a preliminary report

Description: There is an interest in discovering the various peace time uses of nuclear explosives. One of the proposals is the building of harbors. There are several ports along the west coast of South America where lighterage is necessary. This implies a need for expanded harbor facilities. The problem is to find a good location for creating a harbor, and the feasibility of accomplishing this with the use of nuclear force. Feasibility includes blast effects, radiation hazards, the number of weapons needed… more

Pressing technology. [Quarterly report], January--March 1971

Description: Work has started to determine pressing variables of PBX LX-10, objective being to produce the highest density possible efficiently without major equipment modifications. Temperatures > 2000 F can be produced in an entrapped air bubble when repressing HE parts directly in oil, because of burning of the oil. Temperature over water can exceed 600 F.

Thermal properties and chemical reactivity. [Quarterly report], April--June 1971

Description: The thermally aged LX-09 skid test parts were disassembled; the Dow Corning 93-120 silicone used to pot the parts in the aluminum hemisphere was reverting. Thermal analysis of LX-09 samples taken at various locations in the past do not show any variations. Analyses of the atmosphere from six PASS LX-09 mechanical test specimens are reported. The technique used to isolate two of the low boiling impurities in FEFO are discussed and an IR spectrum of one is reported. The results from the thermal a… more

Acoustic flaw triangulation on a thin spherical shell: an analytical solution

Description: An analytical solution for acoustic flaw triangulation on thin spherical shells has been prepared. A FORTRAN program is provided which takes as input the differences in the arrival times of acoustic energy at the transducers and evaluates the spherical coordinates of the flaw. Only three experimental time differences need be measured. For this measurement, four transducers are required. One transducer is placed at (R, 0, 0) in spherical coordinates; the other three are spaced 90 degrees apart a… more
