Accurate Nuclear Fuel Burnup Analyses; Ninth Quarterly Progress Report, (December 1963 - February 1964)

Description: The objective of the Accurate Nuclear Fuel Burnup Analyses program is to develop more accurate methods for burnup analysis for general use than the current method of analysis of Ca-137 or Sr-90. The program will require from three to five years of effort.

AEC Fuel Cycle Program Design and Fabrication of Special Assembly 9-L : Irradiation Performance Test of UO2-Cermet Fuel

Description: Technical report describing a UO2-Mo cermet fuel assembly fabricated for long-term irradiation performance testing in the Vallecitos Boiling water Reactor. The design and fabrication histories of this assembly are described and pre-irradiation data on each individual rod are presented. Molybdenum was added to improve the bulk thermal conductivity of the fuel, so that fuel temperatures would remain comparatively low during high-power level operation of the fuel element. The molybdenum was inc… more

ANALYSIS OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED GRIDS OF PERPENDICULAR BEAMS

Description: An analysis of a rectangular grid of perpendicular beams simply supported at the ends is presented. Bending, shearing, and torsionnl effects of beams with arbitrary cross sections are taken into account, and the beams may be subjected to uniform or concentrated loads. An energy method is used in the analysis, and a matrix formulation for determining the unknown coefficients appearing in the Fourier series expression for the lateral deflection is given. This formulation is especially suited for … more

An Annotated Bibliography of Analytical Methods for Alkali Metals

Description: A total of 107 abstracts is presented on analytical methods for alkali metals, as a part of a program for the evaluation of the performance of the primary cold trap from the Enrico Fermi Reactor. The abstracts are arranged into sections dealing with general aspects; sampling and dissolution techniques; and determination of uncombined alkali metal, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other impurities. Corrosion of Refractory Metals by Lithium

Description: ABS>The pure metals niobium, tantalum, vanadium, titanium, and zirconium exhibit excellent resistance to dissolutive attack by lithium at temperatures even in excess of 800 deg C. However, the presence of small quantities of oxygen in either niobium or tantalum can cause the rapid penetration of these metals by lithium over a wide range of temperatures. Vanadium, titanium, and zirconium, on the other hand, do not show this susceptibility to lithium penetration even at oxygen concentrations in e… more

Cost Study of a Large Sodium Cooled Fast Breeder Reactor for a Sea Water Desalination Plant

Description: A very rough preliminary design study and cost estimate are presented for a 25,000 Mwt plutonium fueled fast breeder reactor for use in a desalination plant. Designed for operation with sodium temperature below 800°F, primary system can be constructed of carbon or low alloy steels. The reactor vessel is 44 ft inside diameter, and with a coolant temperature rise of 260°F, four pumps circulate 2,400,000 gpm of sodium through four 6250 Mw once-through steam generators. Saturated steam at 600 psia … more

DESIGN AND THERMAL ANALYSIS OF EGCR CONTROL RODS

Description: Control rods were designed for use in the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor that are sufficientiy flexible to move in bowed graphite channels. The stainless steel-clad B/sub 4/C bushings that make up the control rods are suspended on cables connected to the drive mechanisms. The rods are cooled internally by helium admitted at the top of the control rod nozzles. Tests of a mockup of a control rod verified the feasibility of assembly and provided pressure drop data. No major manufacturing problems… more
