Activity of irradiated regular metal in buckets

Description: The potential of shipping a bucket of metal that has not had sufficient decay time is a common problem to all Reactor Processing Operations. The only method at present to assure shipping adequately decayed metal is by procedural control. This study was performed to determine the feasibility of establishing decay time for irradiated metal in buckets by radiation activity measurements.

Cratering Experience With Chemical And Nuclear Explosives

Description: Over the past 13 years a considerable body of data on explosive cratering has been developed for application to nuclear excavation projects. These data were obtained from some ten cratering programs using chemical explosives (TNT or nitromethane) and seven nuclear cratering detonations. The types of media studied have ranged from marine muck to hard, dry basalt, although most effort has been devoted to craters in NTS desert alluvium and basalt. Considerable effort has also been devoted to the s… more

End closure of hot die size diffusion bonded fuel elements

Description: Studies initiated at Hanford in 1961 for the purpose of developing an alternate cladding process for I&D fuel elements for the eight existing production reactors indicated that the hot die sizing diffusion bonding process offered the greatest incentive. Hot die sizing was the most attractive with respect to improved fuel quality and potential reduction in fuel element unit cost when compared to the existing AlSi brazing process. Initial development work consisted of determining optimum process … more
