ACTIVITY RELEASE FROM THE N.S. SAVANNAH IN THE MAXIMUM CREDIBLE ACCIDENT

Description: The release of fission products that would occur following the maximum credible accident aboard the N.S. Savannah has been examined. Four significantly different, but realistic, operating histories were considered. The rate of release of noble gases and of iodine isotopes as a function of time after the accident was determined for each operating history and for both normal and emergency reactor-compartment ventilation systems. The influence of radioactive decay and of the time delay in release … more

METALLOGRAPHY OF URANIUM CONTAINING SMALL ADDITIONS OF IRON, SILICON, OR ALUMINUM

Description: In uranium with alloying additions of up to 400 ppm Fe and up to 800 ppm of either Si or Al, the various U-containing phases were examined with the electron microscope. These phases were also extracted chemically and identified by electron diffraction. During gamma -phase heat treatments, the alloying additions, as well as impurity atoms, segregate into networks of incipient'' precipitates that can be seen only afier certain etching treatments. The Effects of 250-kv X-Ray on the Dog's Pancreas: Morphological and Functional Changes

Description: Previous investigations that the pancreas is a radioresistant organ. Ivy in 1924 noted the presence of a fibrotic atrophic pancreas in a dog which had received one erythema dose to the epigastrium. Fisher in 1923 reported that four to five erythema doses delivered in a single application caused complete disappearance of the irradiated pancreatic remnant in about two months. These dogs died because of uncontrolled diabetes. One dog that received four erythema doses (possibly 200 r) was sacrifice… more

Experiments on a Large Volume Electron-Cyclotron Heated Plasma

Description: As part of the thermonuclear effort at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, large volume high-beta plasmas have recently been produced by microwave power at the electron-cyclotron frequency. The original work was done with 13-cm microwave radiation in a magnetic mirror and was reported at Salzburg. Since that time, higher frequency and higher power radiation has been used in a succession of experiments. The current experiments involve heating a plasma in the EPA Facility which has a 3:1 magnetic mirr… more

The Bannock Thrust Zone Southeastern Idaho

Description: Abstract: The Bannock overthrust in southeastern Idaho and northcentral Utah was originally described by Richards and Mansfield (1912) as a single large thrust fault that formed at the close of the Laramide orogeny and was folded by renewed compression near the end of Pliocene time. Later Mansfield expanded and revised his interpretation of the Bannock overthrust so that at least the northern part of the overthrust was thought to be a thrust zone in which the individual faults originated in a f… more

An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter

Description: An isochronal differential-type microcalorimeter has been designed and constructed. As a result of its simple design it is very easy to handle the samples and assemble the calorimeter. Important to the operation of the calorimeter is a program, also working on the differential principle, that provides linear temperature rise of the samples. The calorimeter is used to measure very small energy releases such as those found in precipithtion, stored energy, etc. It is demonstrated that the calorime… more

Control of the Dissolved Gases in the Moderator of the HWCTR

Description: The Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) is used to test prototype fuel elements for power reactors that are moderated with heavy water and fueled with natural or slightly enriched uranium. During the initial critical experiments in the HWCTR, it was observed that there were unexpected variations in nuclear reactivity. Investigations revealed that this effect was due to bubble of helium gas appearing and disappearing in the moderator. An examination of the expected operating conditions… more

A METHOD OF PROCESS IDENTIFICATION OF CERTIAN LINEAR CONTROL SYSTEMS

Description: ln the case of a linear-lumped control system with slowly changing performance characteristic, the process identification problem can be solved by evaluating, as functions of time, the coefficients of the polynomials that constitute the transfer function of the undetermined control system. A method of estimating these coefficients is described; and its advantages and limitations are discussed. The technique applies only to linear-lumped control systems whose zeros are known, and hence estimates… more

COMPOUNDS OF DIVALENT-LANTHANIDES. PREPARATION, OPTICAL PROPERTIES, AND CRYSTAL STRUCTURE

Description: Preparation of the sulfates, carbonates, and fluorides of divalent samarium, europium, and ytterbium is described. Crystallographic data from both x-ray and optical examination of the compounds are presented. Due to the instability of these plus (II) salts, the precision of the measurement is affected, but sufficient for characterization. A simple and convenient electrolytic method was devised to prepare the divalent sulfates. By metathetical reactions, carbonates and fluorides were prepared. T… more
